Since upgrading to Yosemite I have hit multiple problems! One being my Epson All in one XP 312 will print but no longer scan. It says there is no communication between scanner and mac. I have upgraded the drivers to lastest version and downloaded Apples update fro Epson to no avail...HELP!
After the uninstall of Yosemite, check for updates of the epson drivers. If there are reinstall the driver.
If not remove the printer from the "Printers&Fax" in SystemPreferences. Then add it again.
On the printer redo the settings, especially the wireless connection.

I concur with LexShellings. Most likely a driver issue. Download the latest Yosemite compatible Epson Driver for your scanner (providing they have one yet).
Of course "After the uninstall of Yose..." should read After the install...

I did dowload updated drivers firstly from Epson, then noticed OS X Applications folder there was an update for the Epson printer.. downloaded and still did not work. It says there is a communication error with the printer. The printer works but scanner doesnt seem to be visible via wi-fi connection. I dont have a USB cprint cable in house but I think that is my next move??
Yes it is always the scanner...
After installing the new scanner driver: restart the mac (it should be in the Users&Groups/LoginItems).
Then do as I do: shut off the printer, turn it on, (do the settings again and) do the connection to the wifi again.

I deleted every trace of Epson software on the mac and uninstalled the printer & Turned it off. Turned off my Wi-fi Network. Turned off the computer. Re-started and downloaded Driver v.9.31 and scan V4.0.10 plus software updater. These are the latest drivers available for the Epson XP-312 - Printer works but no scanner - Communication error with scanner it says.
I checked Applications and there was another update showing for Epson, so I thought surely this must be it, downloaded and installed - but exactly the same problem!! I will go on Epson chat support tommorrow but having already spent hours trying to resolve this Im tempted just to go out and buy a new scanner, even though its only about 6 months old!!!
Hang on I'm here again!! The scanner has just worked!! It wont work via Launchpad/ System Preferences/ printers& Scanners/ Scan or Image Capture - but just realised the latest scan driver download from Epson has put an EPSON scan icon on my desktop and it works!!!!!! 🙂 🙂

Unless people actually have an epson printer, I wish they wouldn't chime in with basic re-install, un-install, and update driver phrases.
-removing the epson printer from list and adding it -FAIL
-restarting PC or epson printer -FAIL
-updating epson wireless connection -FAIL
-updating epson drivers -FAIL
Heres the real issue Epson printer/scanner folks running Yosemite 10.10 - when the OS upgraded, it forgot about printer/scanner duos. You need to reassign the scanner IP address. As of now your mac can't see the epson as a scanner, only a printer, and the epson scanner can't see the Mac. The solution below is only a bypass, not a direct fix, as apple will need to fix the way it views epson and maybe other brand printer/scanners.
SOLUTION
You need the Epson Scan Utility - if you already have it then just update your settings: read below
Go to your Launchpad or applications and search for "Epson Scan Settings" App and open this.
(if you don't have this app go to epson, lookup your printer/scanner and download the scan utility app) (Download gives you 2 apps: scan utility and settings )
Open the settings app: Once inside this app is will ask you to choose your scanner, then select connection as Network, then add the scanner it finds, then hit ok.
Thats it!
Now just use your epson scan utility to scan. Unfortunately Yosemite still won't recognize scanner in printers and scanners page and in image capture, but hey at least you can scan now. Im hoping after a restart and a few scanner uses it might finally get identified as a scanner by the OS but its doubtful.

Thank you for this breakdown. Unfortunately it isn't working for me. If you (or anyone else) has suggestions, I would appreciate it. I have a new iMac with Yosemite. My Epson xp-800 is attached to my airport time capsule. On my old computer I got the tabs for print and scan in the utility- now only print. Epson does not have the scan app for my computer, but recommends using Image Capture. I have updated all drivers and system software, as well as turned everything on and off. Device does not come up in Image Capture and I can still only use Epson as a printer. Very frustrating! Thank you.
