need help ripping and re-authoring dvd

Hi everybody,

i have a dvd that i need to rip and re-author. the dvd is the only footage of this movie. no hard drive files.

I am using mpeg streamclip to rip the dvd and need to know the optimum export settings to easily re-author back with DVD studio pro.

ripping to mov, the files are way to big. not sure if should rip to dv or mp4.

thank you for any advice you can give me.

Does .mov have lossless codecs? I am familiar with it as a package for lossy codecs but don't know all the details since I rarely use it. I don't do much DVD authoring myself. Isn't .dv the uncompressed format? I don't do much with video so I can't provide expert help. I only used iMovie once and the files I was using went from 500MB mp4 to 17 GB so I am presuming they were uncompressed! I would think the best compression would be what barely fits on the DVD since the less the compression the better the quality.
