Q: Mac Plus ?

I just bought a Mac Plus when I start it up it beeps and then goes to the screen with a disk with a question mark. I bought a set of disks that are supposed to have the operating system on it they say Macintosh and Install. The Disk is a high density 400k/800k. It seems to read it for a couple seconds and spits it back out.

These diskettes are High Density (HD), as you mentioned in your original message. However, the icon means that disks cannot be used in older 400K/800K floppy drives.

The Macintosh Plus can only handle up to 800K. Such diskettes are 2DD/DSDD (two-sided, double density). 1.44 MB HD diskettes (as in the case of the System 7.1 shown in the pictures) are not compatible.

System 7.1 as such would be OK for the Macintosh Plus (if it has at least 2 MB of RAM), but the installation/transfer then has to be carried out using another older (pre-1998) Macintosh computer (with a 1.44 MB floppy drive) as an intermediary. Also, in order to install at all, an external hard drive would be required for the Macintosh Plus.

Otherwise, you have to run the Macintosh Plus directly from a system on a floppy disk in the floppy drive. In that case an operating system such as 6.0.3 would be suitable (1 MB of RAM). It is possible to swap floppies in order to use programs on other disks, but this is slow. An external hard drive is recommended.

System 6.x.x and System 7.0 were available on 800K (2DD/DSDD) disks.
