Can't install or find HP Deskjet D1400 series 4.0.4 driver for iMac OS X Mavericks

Just purchased a new iMac December 2014 OS X Maverick (I do not want to update to Yosemite). I tried installing my HP Deskjet d1400 series printer via usb port, when I tried printing nothing happens. Though, I can print as usual from my 2011 Macbook Air OS X Mountain lion.

I noticed that when installing the printer on the iMac the specific driver was not listed. I tried hp's website for the driver download (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4142&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&s w_lang=&product=3311793#N195), but there was no download available for the mac, only instructions on how to install using OS X. When I checked the apple website for the printer compatibility list, (OS X: Printer and scanner software available for download - Apple Support) it list the printer as being compatible but gives the instruction to do a software update, before installing a printer.

Again, I do not want Yosemite! Is it possible to install this printer without updating? Please advise.

It should be possible to install it.

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.
