iPad Air 2 touch screen problem while charging

I recently bought an iPad Air 2 and found quickly that when it is plugged in to charge the touch screen gets sporadic. Sometimes it doesn't register a touch at all and then other times it way over sensitive. It makes typing anything, especially passwords, practically impossible. When I unplug the lightning connector the device works perfectly though. Because of this I took my device in and got a different one from the Apple store. But, the new device has the exact same issue. I have tried different power sources and cables on both of the devices. I have called support and walked through resetting the entire system to start fresh, but still no solution.

Has anyone else had this issue with an iPad Air 2?

I have a similar problem with my old iPad 2. I soon realised that if I'm touching the metal back, the problem goes away, so I'm guessing you have your iPad in a protective case or it's sitting on the table and you are only making contact with the screen? I assume my issue is therefore something to do with earthing the device, or static. I've just bought an Air 2, and that has a similar issue while it's in its case. I'm not sure that's much help, but at least identifying the problem may help someone more knowledgable offer an explanation!

Thanks Hawksmoor! That is really helpful in trying to find the problem. It is exactly as you said. If I am not touching the metal (either edge or back) of the ipad then the touch screen is frantic when it is charging. I tried a few tests and even if it is in the case if I put my finger on the exposed metal part, the issue goes away. If the metal parts of the device are not being touched then the issue persists and it is frustrating to use.

It is nice to understand a little bit more of what is causing the issue, but this sounds like a silly problem for a product on the level of the iPad from a company like Apple. It doesn't seem like a "you just have to deal with it" issue. Could it be that a number ipad air 2 that were produced in the first shipments have this grounding related issue? Apple support told me that this was not a known issue, but that was 8 months ago when I bought it right after it was released.

I am seeing exactly the same issue. Thought it was just a software issue as I rebooted last week and it seemed to clear the issue however you nailed it with your assessment. When I am plugged in and charging I get exactly the same symptoms, sluggish typing and then double characters. Backspace is awful. Even general swiping is just a pain.

I may well have to take mine back in to the store to see if they can advise a solution. Sounds as if there may well be an issue with these when charging and having you now seen it on two different units then it may well be more of an issue.

I've had mine since a couple of days after they released the Air 2 and really hadn't noticed the issue until now, but I tend to charge and then use rather than use while charging so will see what the store say when I take it back in.

You mention trying different chargers. Have you tried both Apple and third-party chargers?

I have this problem when I'm using a third-party charger and cable (both the wall charger and the cord are third-party, but I think both are licensed by Apple). The touch screen is nearly unusable when I'm plugged into it. I have my iPad Air 2 plugged into my MacBook Pro with the Apple lightning cord right now, and it's completely fine. It's also fine when it's not connected to the charger. My old iPad (iPad 3?) did not have this problem.

I was going to send my iPad in for service until I realized that it was fine when not connected to my third-party charger. Now I'm not sure whether Apple will be able to reproduce the problem.

i had this problem too... I just had my iPad air2 a week ago and works perfectly fine Even when using my old iPad 2 charger.. not til today when I use it while charging. Touch screen was unresponsive and became fuzzy all the time. So I tried my new charger that came with the ipadair2 it didn't fixed it. then I noticed that another charger was plugged in my multi socket extension plug and was a FAKE charger. Tried to unplugged it and it solved the problem. My iPad air 2 works perfectly fine even with my ipad 2 charger.

I have an iPad Air 2 (Wi-Fi only, 128GB, iOS 11.1) and I still have this issue. Touch interface is jump to the point you cannot use it until you unplug the charger. As soon as you unplug the charger all is perfect again. I prefer to run down my battery to 5% and then charge it to maintain battery life then use it while plugged in. I am updating to 11.1.2 now to see if that addresses the issues.
