I would like to access files that are on my iMac using my iPad and home wireless network. My immediate need is to look at photos from past holidays to help me plan new holiday. There would also be many other uses when looking at non iTunes files.

Thanks for this info. I have looked at the links provided and they all seem useful. I think I will give Dropbox a try first and see how that works for me. A friend of my wife had suggested that she installs Dropbox so they can exchange files, but she has not yet got round to installing. Perhaps I can pursuade her to try it as well!
You could look into Apple's airdrop. Don't know why I didn't include in earlier article.
