If you are using iCloud, your projects will be backed up there and can been seen in GarageBand on your Mac if you have one. If you want them backed up, you can make a back up in iTunes to save the projects as a whole and that back up can be restored in case something happens.

Many thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it, but sadly none of these options are going to work for me. iCloud won't work for the reasons stated in my original post. As for iTunes backup - I can't carry another computer around with me just for backups, so I'd have to rely on whatever machines are available to me in internet cafes. Just not practical. I fear my brand new shiny iPad Mini Retina 128GB is completely useless.
Maybe there's a Jailbreak solution :-/
