It would help to know more about your computer. "PowerMac" covers a decade. To get more information about your computer, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..." Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).

How long has it been since you changed the PRAM battery? It could be your PRAM is corrupt. I remember monitor issues when I bought a used computer and the battery was nearly dead. A computer will run fine with a bad battery and through a normal restart, but come the next compete power down it forgets all its settings, and can make a mess of those that exist such as display settings.

Tried a PRAM reset?

To the people using this tape method to fix your Cinema Display. Keep in mind that the problem is caused by a failing 3.3v regulator on the logic board inside the screen case. Taping it will force the screen to keep working, and given time, will probably kill the logic board. The proper repair is to remove the logic board, and replace the 3.3 volt regulator. This regulator is connected to the PSU sense signal pins, so when it fails, it causes the display to think you have a defective power brick connected.
