Q: Sudden loud static noise on bluetooth headset

I'm using LG Tone+ (HBS-730) bluetooth headset on my MacBook Air mid13 on OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.

Since a few days ago, while I was listening to music and such on my headset, sometimes, a loud static noise (max volume I think) started suddenly, which shocked me and led me to quickly pull the earpieces out. No other sound is recognizable since this static noise is so loud. The noise does not stop until the bluetooth is disconnected by either turning off the headset or the bluetooth module from mac. Turning the headset on again, it works again normal.

While the noise exists, if I mute the volume on mac, the static noise stops, but comes back when I increase the volume again. Volume control on the headset did not do anything.

I'm suspecting either the bluetooth module on the laptop or the bluetooth module in the headset is bad, but couldn't test with another headset as I don't have anything else. It happened 3 times for the past 3 days I have been using it.

MBA is a little bit over 1 year old and  the headset is about 1.5 years old, no related problems were experienced in the past.

Does anyone have any clue or similar experience?

Same issue here. OS X 10.10.2.

I can't pinpoint a common type or activity that triggers this. It truly feels like a random event. It's actually painful and startling when it happens.

I have been experiencing a very similar issue with my MacBook Pro (2011). I'll be streaming my audio to my home theatre system through a BT Audio connection and all of the sudden a deafening static will come through the speakers. Its loud enough to make me believe that it could cause damage to my equipment. I'm also running OS X Yosemite. I hope that they can identify this issue and resolve it. Until then I'm just going to use my iPad mini to stream music. No problems with iOS 8 and BT Audio.

This has happened connected to a Bluetooth to 3.5 adapter by Avantree. I would expect this would aso happen connect to a bluetooth stereo in a car and could potentially cause an accident if the driver was suddenly startled by the loud white noise seemingly from nowhere.

So far, so good - seems to have done the trick. Thanks very much!

Of course, this probably raises more questions than it answers, but at least my eardrums haven't been perforated!!

I reported the issue the other day and attached a couple of analysis files so they could see what was going on. A couple of days later, I got the following response. So they ARE aware of it. Whether there will be a forthcoming bugfix within a reasonable time frame is another issue altogether.

Engineering has determined that your bug report is a duplicate of another issue and will be closed.

Good news, So, fingers crossed for 10.10.3 then.

I'd rather wait for that than mess about in the terminal.

Shame on you Apple! I just had this crazy loud white noise, it was really painful and puts my hearing at risk.

You guys should be sued over this!! I've really had it with apple now. So many flaws in recent products, but this really beats everything

    my ears are still ringing

The fact that it has gone on, unfixed in a public release after months, and they have known about it, they really should be sued.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there is some kind of class action suit brought against them for it.  We are talking about permanent damage to people's hearing.  That's liability folks.

But hey, what's a few million dollar loss off the back of Apple's billions?

This is ridiculous and painful. Has happened at least 30 times to me over the last few weeks.

Is there a fix for this yet?

I have same issue when using Klipsch Image One II Bluetooth headset. The issue can be repeated by screen resolution change while using the headset.

I'm downloading Mac OS X 10.10.3, I'm going to test to see if this resolves the issue.

In my computer, the issue happens when I hear Bluetooth music and I also hear the line-in (I have my DirecTV 3.5MM audio out hooked up to the line-in part of my computer).

Bluetooth audio works, but static noise happens when I try to hear the Audio-In while listening to Bluetooth.

I hope this fixes the problem.

10.10.3 does fix the static/white noise. Anyone having this issue should download it as it's out of beta and in the Mac App Store now.

You got to love how Apple described this fix in the official OS X 10.10.3 Release Notes:

"Fixes an issue that might cause Bluetooth devices to disconnect"

The good news is that this issue has officially been put to bed. Hopefully no one has suffered any permanent hearing damage because of this.
