Q: Sudden loud static noise on bluetooth headset

I'm using LG Tone+ (HBS-730) bluetooth headset on my MacBook Air mid13 on OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite.

Since a few days ago, while I was listening to music and such on my headset, sometimes, a loud static noise (max volume I think) started suddenly, which shocked me and led me to quickly pull the earpieces out. No other sound is recognizable since this static noise is so loud. The noise does not stop until the bluetooth is disconnected by either turning off the headset or the bluetooth module from mac. Turning the headset on again, it works again normal.

While the noise exists, if I mute the volume on mac, the static noise stops, but comes back when I increase the volume again. Volume control on the headset did not do anything.

I'm suspecting either the bluetooth module on the laptop or the bluetooth module in the headset is bad, but couldn't test with another headset as I don't have anything else. It happened 3 times for the past 3 days I have been using it.

MBA is a little bit over 1 year old and  the headset is about 1.5 years old, no related problems were experienced in the past.

Does anyone have any clue or similar experience?

You'll need to start a new discussion for your problem. This is purely an OS X issue with bluetooth and any audio source (not just iTunes).

Hope you find a fix for your problem.

Thanks, Stuartea71, but I posted here because I read multiple posts in this thread which stated that the OPers didn't know if the issue was iTunes or OS X related.  I thought I'd post this here because I think my similar issue on Windows 8.1 after upgrading iTunes might indicate the locus of the problem is iTunes.  Yes, I will post/follow in another thread from here.  Good luck to you all.

From the start I have had the problem while I was not using iTunes, so I was aware it was probably a problem with the bluetooth driver/module. However, insights like that is worth mentioning to isolate problems for the users and Apple engineers. I would also recommend that you start another thread for more focused discussions if your problem is not related to MacBook or Yosemite.

I can confirm I did the very similar thing and caused the issue consistently.

I had music playing through Bluetooth headset (Google Music streaming), made my laptop goto sleep by selecting "Sleep" command from Alfred, woke up the computer, then as soon as I log back in, it starts the noise.

I would suggest anyone with this issue, if possible, take it to an Apple Store and demonstrate the problem (with a warning they may go deaf).

    Hi ,

Same problem for me using Bose Mini Soundlink Bluetooth speaker on MacBook white Late-2009 with Yosemite installed yesterday.

    It's a problem of Yosemite.

If you want to make a demo of the problem you can make that :

Put a sound with your BT speaker (or headset ) connected

Launch the TERMINAL and purge the RAM ( command : sudo purge )

And hello Noise ;D  (noise appear only on BT...)

    Zz

Ps: no solution for the moment....

    Same problem.

    My configuration:

    MacBook Pro 15" late 2010, Intel core i7, 2.66GHz, 8GB

    Apple bluetooth keyboard

    Magic Mouse

    Yosemyte 10.10.2

    Itunes 12.1.0.50

    Bluetooth audio remote: Sony BM10

    Bluetooth RSSI: -59db to -65db

    Codec: aptX

What: loud "pink noise", no sound

When it happens: wake up after screen saver

Temporary solution: disconnect the BM10 remote device from menu, re-connect.

Note: the problem arose when I upgraded to Yosemite.

Happening to me, as well. I JUST upgraded to Yosemite Friday afternoon, and was greeted with this little problem right off the bat. With any audio, not just iTunes. Great introduction to Yosemite.

    I have a Macbook pro 17" from 2009.

    Yosemite (10.10.2 (14C109))

    iTunes (12.1.0.50).

Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    bluetooth headphones (Inland ProHT 87091)

I was able to make it do it, as someone else said, when switching apps if the CPU got very busy, or in situations where, in the past, the audio would simply have paused or cut out briefly while the computer did something else intensive. For example, going from full-screen to normal on a YouTube video, or having Time Machine kick in while you're doing something else.

I'm glad it's not just me. I was seriously considering ditching Yosemite altogether and restoring from Time Machine back to Mavericks.

Just happened to me. My ears are still ringing.

I was listening to music on iTunes when suddenly a jarring screeching noise came from my bluetooth headphones. I was able to mute the volume on my Mac, but it seemed like every volume tier besides mute had a maximum volume screeching noise.

Just before this occurred, I was in the middle of running multiple applications (Pixelmator, VLC, Safari and iTunes) and the sound triggered just as I started uploading a large image file.

    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010)

    OS X 10.10.2

    Headphones: Creative WP-450 (EF0460)

Second time this has occured. The other time was about a week ago. Has only occurred since updating from 10.10.1 to 10.10.2

Someone (PATRICKMELE) posted a reply with a suggestion from LifeHacker.com for fixing this. I tried it and it did NOT work. Within two minutes of listening to audio, I got the static burst when I refreshed a web page in another window.

    Alas.

I just wanted to chime in and say that I'm experiencing the same issue. I've been researching this for several days and I'm glad I came across this thread. I've also submitted two cases to Apple via the Feedback Assistant app since I'm part of the Yosemite Beta testing plan.

    My setup:

    • Mid-2011 Macbook Air
    • OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2
    • Apple Magic Mouse
    • Apple Wireless Keyboard
    • Beats Studio Wireless headphones

This is what I've discovered thus far:

    • The issue appears to be with the public release of OS X 10.10.2. I never experienced it once with any of the beta releases.
    • The issue is not iTunes specific. I've had the same issue with Pandora.
    • The issue appears to be with Bluetooth audio only. I've yet to experience it if I plug my headset into my laptop.
    • When the loud static noise occurs pausing the audio for a few seconds then playing it again seems to clear it up for a while.
    • I stumbled upon a way to reliably reproduce this issue. While bluetooth audio is playing toggling back and forth from "Graphite" and "Blue" in the Appearance setting in System Preferences will cause it to happen.

Same issue with the Bluetoooth Beats Studio Wireless headphones. Playing music on iTunes or streaming it over internet services such as Spotify and Tidal produce the same problem. I'm going to take them into the apple store tomorrow along with my 2013 Retina Macbook Pro to have it checked out. Hopefully this didn't damage my earphones but i think my ears have been scarred already.

So as of right now i'm basically forced to use my iPhone (Didn't update to 8.1.3 yet as I'm afraid that it will produce the same issue) to use the bluetooth function on my headphones

That's good. Maybe if enough of us take the computers to the stores and let them see what it's doing first-hand, they'll get a better clue what's causing it.

I am experiencing exactly the same issue. I am running late 2012 macbook pro 13, connecting to Sony SRS BT100 bluetooth speakers. I'll be listening to a track on my iTunes, then BAM! Deafening static. Most irritating and painful thing ever.

Only happened since the latest Yosemite update. Any one know if there's a fix?
