I'm sorry to hear you are having this issue with your Apple TV. If this sleep/wake issue persists, you may want to try doing a hardwired restore from iTunes as noted below (apologies if this is what you have already done):

If the issue persists after an iTunes restore, you may need to have your Apple TV evaluated or serviced. If that is the case, you may find the following page helpful:
