How to downsize 4K to HD 1080p

Starting to work with 4K using FCPX 10.3. I've told that I should edit the original files in 4 K in the timeline and then export or Share to 1080 in order to get the best quality possible at the 1080 HD results. I am on a nMP 6 core with dual 700 graphic cards so the 4K would not have any problem playing well, I think.

Ia this true???? or is there a better way.

Thanks,

AplleLou

I hope people that have actually done it may chime in, but my workflow is "create the project at the size of the desired output".

Most of my projects are 720p, and my camera records in 1080p. This has the advantage of being able to use the extra pixels for either reframing or zooming without loss of quality. This would be even more the case in your situation with all those extra pixels. Plus, you may need to add some stock footage or graphics that are not 4K - this would cause quality degradation if your were to edit in 4K and then downsize for export.

Note that if you edit 4K material into a 1080p timeline FCP X will still have access to all the original pixels - that is why you may be able to scale to 200% without any loss.

Hi Luis

Your workflow definitely makes more sense, and if I read you right that means that I can ingest the 4K material that I shoot, create a project with a 1080 timeline and bring the 4K material and edited in that timeline and FCPX will use the total information of the material while editing and finally render the output as a 1080p timeline as the final production. Definitely make sense, I will try that workflow better if i read you correctly.

Thank You

You realize that you can change the project settings at any time by just selecting the project file in the browser - and then opening the inspector CMD+4 and then simply changing your settings there. Everything will render to your project settings. That way you can have duplicate projects with different settings just by creating snapshots and tweaking them accordingly. I have a mixed 4K/1080 project right now and my main project is set to 1080. All the 4K stuff downrezes in the time line and looks great. You can tweak your 4K shots all day and it still looks pretty good in the 1080 timeline and it is a faster workflow.
