Surface Temperature of MacBook Reaching Triple Digits

When using my 13" Mid-2013 MacBook Air, I was concerned about the temperature of the metal surface at the top left, above the keyboard, proximal to the fan. When using a graphically-intensive application, my notebook began to emit from the fan what sounded not dissimilar to a vacuum cleaner, which I am told is normal. However, when I touched the area in question on the laptop, it was hot. Extremely hot. I felt as though my finger had been burned, and I believe it was, slightly. I subsequently took the temperature with one of those handheld "heat guns" - a device that uses a laser to measure the temperature of a surface - and the area reached about 120ºF. Has anyone had temperatures this high on their computers? I have heard that these products can heat up with some applications, but this seemed a bit over the top. I am fine with it if these temperatures are to be expected, but I have a major concern if they are abnormal.
