iPhone will not play purchased text alerts.

I have an iPhone 5c with 8.1.2 and it keeps playing the default text tone when I select a purchased tone. It will play the tone as a preview but when I receive a message it defaults. I can select any of the built in text tones and it works fine. Just not the purchased tones. The purchased ring tone works fine just the text message tone. I have tried to change the tone and move it back. I have closed all of the open applications and performed a soft power down and hard reset. The phone keeps only playing the default tone even though it is showing that the purchased tone is selected. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did some googling and found how to do a hard reset on an iPhone 7:

Step 1: Press and hold the Lock/Wake button on the right side of your iPhone.

Step 2: At the same time, press and hold down the Volume Down button on the left side while keeping the Lock/Wake button pressed.

The phone reset but I am still having the same problem with my text tones: I can select the ones I downloaded from iTunes but my phone still plays the default tone when I receive a text. Ring tones I downloaded work fine — it's just the text tones that won't work. They play when I select them in settings, just not when I receive a text message.

Ok, this is really weird but get this: I've had the same problem....ringtone appears to be set, works fine during a test but then doesn't work when a call actually comes through.

I have an apple watch too....which I am almost always wearing.

I just realized that the ringtone is working when I DO NOT have my watch on.

Take my watch off and put it on the charger, then my iPhone ringtone works.

I tested this 3 times and it's either the connection or an EXTREMELY weird coincidence.

WEIRD.

try this, it worked for me...

  1. Open Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Go to itunes.com/restore-tones.
  3. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  4. Tap Restore. You'll see a message that reads: "This may take a while. You can continue to use this device while we prepare your tones. You will be sent a push notification when they are ready to download."
  5. Tap Done.
  6. When you receive the notification on your device, tap Download, or, if you receive the notification on your lock screen, swipe to download.* All of your tones will download, including any that are explicit.
  7. Check to make sure that your tones are now on your device:
Ringtones: Tap Settings > Sounds > Ringtone.
Alert tones: Tap Settings > Sounds > Text Tone (or any other alert listed).
If you assigned purchased tones to your contacts, these will also be restored.

That didn't work for me. When I click on the link, iTunes Store says that I have no issues with my tones.

My purchased tones when assigned to a contact stopped working after I upgraded to iOS 9. I can play the tone when selecting a sound, but if assigned to a contact, my iPhone will just play the default text tone alert.

Any other suggestions on how to fix aside from Apple fixing this issue for us?

Thx

I've got the same problem. The only thing that has worked is when I buy a new alert and am required to login, the problem is immediately fixed. This usually lasts a few weeks or months and then the same thing happens all over. My default tone starts to alert, even though my phone shows the bought tone selected in my settings. They really need to fix this.

iPhone will not play purchased text alerts.
