DVD capacity

Trying to burn 2.4 GB of files onto a DVD with 8.5 GB capacity. I get a message saying that the file size is too large for the DVD. Help please!

GRANT: Thanks. First a few clarifications;

I am have both a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro. Using the Mac Pro to burn the files.

I have attempted to burn to both Verbatim 8.5 GB DVDs - DVD+R DV+R DL 8X and to Memorex DVD + R4.7 GB 16x.

After burning, Finder only shows a recordable disk with no content.

Then, I booted up my MacBook Pro, inserted the CD (Not DVD) and it showed the correct disk name and showed all the contents.

My MacPro stats for the disk drives (I have two) are:

  • 18x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    • Writes DVD+R and DVD-R discs at up to 18x speed
    • Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 8x speed
    • Writes DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
    • Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed
    • Reads DVDs at up to 18x speed
    • Writes CD-R and CD-RW discs at up to 32x speed
    • Reads CDs at up to 32x speed
  • One open optical drive bay for optional second SuperDrive

My MacBook Pro disk drive stats are:

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)

Cache: 2048 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Does the above help explain what is going on?
