My finder keeps crashing as I try and copy files over from a dvd

I have about 15 dvds of backed up photos that I'm trying to put back on my computer and the finder keeps crashing on me after I copy a couple folders of pics over. I try to force relaunch the finder but it just freezes and won't even let me restart. I have to hold the finder button for 10 seconds to shut it down. If I keep going this route, to get all the photos back on the computer, I'm going to be shutting it down like a 100 times. This can't be good for the computer. I really don't want to loose these photos! Does any one have any advice? I'm a novice with computers.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Step 1

For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Step 2

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION User Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Sorry. I screwed up. The finder wasn't actually crashing. I just wasn't patient enough to wait. As I would copy a folder from the disk to the computer, every few folders it would freeze the "act" of copying, and I would wait several minutes and nothing would happen. Then I would try and relaunch the finder and would wait like four minutes and the finder would not come back. At this point I assumed it crashed. But when you said the crash report was not right, I tried coping again and found that after seven long minutes of waiting the computer would finally post a message saying it couldn't copy because some of the files in the folder were corrupt. So it never actually crashed. I just had no idea it could take that long for the computer to process something. I'm sorry for wasting your time. Thank you so much for trying to help me though!

Jan 11, 2015 2:45 PM in response to Linc Davis

Just to be more of a pain in the butt and add to my other response saying I screwed up, do you know what the report I posted "is" about? Because I looked at it when you said "Finder" should be in the name, and I noticed that Quark XPress is listed in the info and I don't have Quark XPress. Do you know what that report means? Should I be worried? Is there something on my computer that shouldn't be, that is crashing it? To be honest, I don't even know if what I pasted in the response was a "crash" report. It was just the only thing with the proper date listed where you told me to look. Sorry to be such an annoying novice.

At some point, QuarkXPress was installed and then incompletely uninstalled. There may be other issues, but you should at least remove the leftover piece.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/QuickLook/QuarkXPress.qlgenerator

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Log out or restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

it isn't. Where these photos on your machine before? Why are you moving them around?

I am concerned that you could have a corrupt filesystem and/or a failing hard disk. A failing hard disk can manifest itself with strange failures like this.

I wrote a little diagnostic program to help identify things like this. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID. All it does is run Apple's low-level command-line tools and consolidate the output into a single page. In some circumstances, it can identify failing hard drives.

PS: After powering down your machine like that, you should boot into your Recovery Volume and repair your disk. But run EtreCheck first to see if you have a failing hard disk. If you do, you want to use it as little as possible so you can salvage your files.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

I followed your advice. Thank you! I did a search for Quark on my computer and also found all these files with the name. Do you think it would be safe to delete these as well?

Those all look like Quark files, but I don't recommend that method of removing software.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

Thank you! I'm so glad I asked before I deleted them! I am desperate to learn how to take proper care of my mac and so far I have made a LOT of mistakes. Is there anything you can recommend that would be the best source to learn the in's and out's of the mac beyond the basics? Like how to remove software, or read the console reports, or the best settings for everything, or how to know what shouldn't be on it, or how to keep it running at peek performance, etc. etc. etc... Is there a book, or a website, or Lynda.com maybe? Thank you again for all your advice!

How to maintain a Mac

Make two or more backups of all your files

One backup is not enough to be safe. A copy of a backup doesn't count as another backup; all backups must be made directly from the original data.

Keep at least one backup off site at all times in case of disaster. Backing up to a cloud-data service is one way to accomplish this, but don't rely exclusively on such backups.

In fact, don’t rely exclusively on any single backup method, such as Time Machine.

If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.

Keep your software up to date

In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.

Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Don't install such modifications unless they're absolutely necessary. Remove them when they are no longer needed. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all system modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of difficulties with system updates.

Don't install crapware

...such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.

It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac," "TuneUpMyMac," and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.

As a rule, you should avoid software that changes the way other software works. Plugins for Photoshop and similar programs are an obvious exception to this rule. Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction. Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.

Only install software that is useful to you, not (as you imagine) to the computer. For example, a word processor is useful for writing. A video editor is useful for making movies. A game is useful for fun. But a "cache cleaner" isn't useful for anything. You didn't buy a computer so you could clean caches.

Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts

Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions.

Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.

Avoid malware

"Malware" is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but it's now increasingly common and dangerous.

There is some built-in protection against malware, but you can’t rely on it—the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party "anti-virus" products for protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness—not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.

Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.

In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.

Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.

Don't fill up your disk or SSD

A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a startup failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.

While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.

If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeperto explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.

Relax, don’t do it

Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.

To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime for maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform.

A well-designed computing device is not something you should have to think about much. It should be an almost transparent medium through which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that needs a lot of attention just to keep going, use a PC, or collect antique cars.

The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

Jan 17, 2015 7:45 AM in response to Linc Davis

Thank you so much for the info! It is very helpful. Unfortunately it has led me to need to ask two more questions, and I'm not sure if I should be starting these as a new thread?

The first is about backing up. I don't know how to do a proper back up. Right now, I have two external hard drives. One is always plugged in and getting routine time machine backups to it; the other, I do a time machine back up to, about once a week, and then keep it unplugged in case of power surges. I don't have any place safe outside of my apt to keep backups and I can't afford online backups through icloud or dropbox and such. Instead of doing time machine for the unplugged hard drive, would it be better to just copy all the folders (including system, library, user, etc...) from the computer manually to the hard drive? I don't understand what data needs to be backed up, and how? If my computer suddenly exploded, I have no idea how to use my backups to restore everything back as it was, onto a new computer? How do I properly restore all the data to the new computer? I don't quite understand how to do that with the time machine backups? I don't even know if you can do a full reinstall with time machine backups?

My other question is, would it be possible to wipe my mac mini "clean" and then reinstall only what I want to be on there. I've been recklessly downloading just about anything and everything off the internet for years now, because my X, who always handled all the maintenance and care of my Mac (until I recently got divorced), always told me that this was totally safe to do with a Mac because they don't get viruses or any of that bad stuff. God only knows what crap is on my computer. But I have no idea how to start clean and only put what I want on there. Like how do I save my emails, and my bookmarks along with Firebox itself, and my music, and my fonts, and the apps I do want to keep. I looked in my apps folder and many do not have installers with them, like my Microsoft Office. A few I have the original cd's for, but others like Office I don't. Things like drivers for my scanner and printer I can get online, (or is there other software needed from the cd, I don't have, to make it work?). Also, several of the apps I can re-download off the internet for free, like the Plex Media app. For others though, I'm assuming you need to do more than just copy the app itself into the apps folder. I'm assuming you need an installer for any app to add all the support files. Like is that true of Firefox? How do I pick and choose what I want to reinstall, and leave the useless garbage behind? Or can't it be done. I'm willing to loose some stuff, like Office, if I have too.

I've used macs my whole life practically, but until now, I've never done anything other than turn it on and use applications. My X did everything else, and I'm finding out, he did a lot of things wrong.

If you are backing up using Time Machine, then you are doing a proper backup.

Time Machine Basics

For the 2nd hard drive, another option is a clone. They can be made so you can boot the computer from them if required.

Clone - Carbon Copy Cloner (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)

Clone – Data Backup

Clone – Deja Vu

Clone - SuperDuper

Clone - Synk

Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested

Commonly Used Backup Methods

If you want to make a clean install, boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) on a restart, use Disk Utility to Verify/Repair the disk and run Repair Permissions. Then erase the hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format using the Options button to select GUID. Reinstall the OS. Restart normally and test. Use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to import what you want.
