Q: How to Clone iMacbook Air

I am attempting to erase the hard drive on my iMacbook Air and then use an external hard drive that has a  backup from my iMac Desktop machine to "clone" my iMacbook Air so that it will contact exactly the same data as my iMac Desktop for times that I travel. Can you please help me??

iMac (21.5-inch Late 2009), iOS 8.1.2

Be aware that settings common to a Desktop may differ for a notebook or not even exist. It might be wiser to do a fresh install of OS X on your MBA, then clone only the Home folder from the iMac. You would do this using the Setup Assistant that will run on the MBA after you have erased and installed OS X. You have not provided the version of OS X your are using, so I will assume you know how to do an Erase and Install of your OS X version.

Connect the MBA to the iMac according to the instructions found here: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac. Migrate only the Home folder, third-party support files but do not import system preferences.

For additional information on connecting two computers see Target Disk Mode.
