Q: my old iPod classic does not appear in my iTunes when i plug it into my macbook air, what do i do?

My older iPod classic (1.3 version) will not appear in my iTunes when i plug it into my macbook air. I want to plug it in so i can set it up and download all of my songs to it, but i don't know what to do?
