Can I avoid using optical drive to install a CD?

I have a 2009 MacBookPro, which I need to upgrade and there is no download version available. To do so I need to install a CD. Problem is after three new optical drives I am reluctant to try to use it again. Can I download the CD on a network file server and install from there?

Or, alternatively can I install using my Mac Air remote drive? I can't see a remote drive option on the Pro though?

I would really appreciate your guidance.

Many thanks,

Sharon

MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2009), iOS 5.1.1, my system is actually 10.5.8
