Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Can I go back to an older OS?

I upgraded to Yosemite in the early autumn. My 2011 iMac has always had a tendency to crash (programs or whole computer) but that increased after installing Yosemite. I never upgraded to Mavericks though. I think I was using Snow Leopard before.

iMac, iOS 7.0.4

I'm not sure what this is doing in the iTunes for Mac forum.

Unless you made a clone backup of your whole hard drive using a special application reverting will mean having to back up your data files, wipe you hard drive, install whatever older OS version you have and then reinstalling the non-OS components from your backup. You're better off asking on the Yosemite forum or whatever OS version you had before. If you tell us which one we can request this be post be relocated there.

Sorry, I find these forums confusing, even though I'm active in other online forums so I'm not inexperienced. I had no idea I was posting in a particular sub-forum.

Is there a way for me to know what OS I was using before? All I remember is that it wasn't Mavericks. Does that matter?

Since I do not have a back up and what you said sounds complicated for me, I think I'd like to take my computer to the Apple Store and have them downgrade my computer. Will they charge for this?

The thing is, I'm not sure if Yosemite is the cause of my problems or if it's my memory cards. So I'm trying to figure out which change to make first.

Besides the general crashing I mentioned in my first post, since October I have suffered repeated Lightroom catalog corruptions. Is that more likely caused by my 2011 iMac being unable to handle Yosemite, or due to these two memory cards I added to my computer soon after I bought the computer in May 2011? I've experimented with the memory cards. I removed the two "new" 4GB cards and ran the computer for 2 weeks in December on just the two 2GB cards that came with the computer. While the computer was excruciatingly slow, I did not experience a single crash nor any problem with Lightroom. I have always had at least one crash per week forever, so that's something! When I switched out the cards a couple of weeks ago, to test running the computer on just the two "new" 4GB, the first thing that happened when I restarted was Safari crashed. Repeatedly. Until I restarted again. The computer has trouble opening Mail and PSE without crashing, too, and my Lightroom catalog has become irreparably corrupted. (That just happened Friday and is the worst thing. I am a photographer. I need a reliable Lightroom catalog.)

So, doesn't it sound like it's the 4GB memory cards that are to blame?

I'm sorry this is in the wrong place. I don't see how to move it. Maybe I should try starting a new thread in a more appropriate forum, if I can figure out how.

Yes you can, if you have made a backup beforehand. Or take it to Apple, and they will charge you. But the Mac should handle Yosemite easily with about 8GB of memory installed. Minimum is 4GB.

Which iMac do you have? Select on the Apple icon, left top: About this Mac.

Now do as BabyBoomer suggested. Download the utility, run it and post us the results. The program will put the results directly in the Clipboard and you only have to paste it. We know now that your hardware should be able to handle almost anything you throw at it comfortably.

Firstly, we need to focus on your security, the security of your system:

In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.

Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked

Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)

or

Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)

With that done, we will proceed with the next steps.

Jan 12, 2015 5:49 AM in response to iphonemichele

No, but it most definitely contributed towards it. And it is good housekeeping not to leave the front door of your house open, day and night, whether you are there or not, 365 days in a year. Who knows what robbers, thieves or what else will enter your house?

Next we will go down on the list provided by your EtreCheck. You have a couple of StartUp Items listed there. As pointed out, just below that, Startup Items have been done away with. Obsolete!

Click three times on this:

/Library/Startupitems

and depress Command and C to copy it.

Thus, Open Finder. Press Shift and Command and G to open a window and click in this small window. Press Command and V to paste the content.

You will now be in the directory where the startup files are. Delete the content by first dragging them to the Desktop, then restart the Mac and test that all is running normal (more normal than before). And thereafter putting it in the Trash and permanently Emptying the Trash Can.

Test and give us another EtreCheck

Your Tascam hardware is not supported, and the extensions in use are certified only for Mountain Lion, 10.8 (See below)

User uploaded file

Deal with that, your installation of 10.10 has been modified by kernel extensions designed for 10.8

These items (from your startup folder) are obsolete

So If you did not check the compatibility of drivers and hardware before installing, now is the time.

Take particular note of the following:

Only in that there is now nothing stopping you from downloading any and all malware available.

Can I go back to an older OS?
