Q: I keep receiving phishing emails what do I do?

I Have been receiving phishing emails a lot lately from "Apple" I know they are fake but I keep getting them, I've gotten 3 yesterday and now 1 tonight. 3 were about updating my information or my account would expire in 48 hours, other was about password reset or to unlock account. They range from saying dear customer or dear (email address)....I know they are fake and not from Apple themselves, I don't know why I keep getting them I noticed they seem to appear after I buy online on eBay (I buy always from sellers in China) could that be linked somehow? It worries me! I have forwarded all of them to Apple but something that is making me nervous is I checked the sender email while on my iPad and in 3 of them it said the sender was my email address so meaning I sent them to myself?...does that mean what I think it means? Someone got into my account or is it some kind of trick or something...what do I do?

iPod touch, iOS 6.0.1

    Simple solution,

    1. Use a different email when purchasing on eBay. (Could be difficult if you use PayPal though so be careful)
    2. Send these emails to spam. (Your email provider should have the option to find emails like those you put in spam to detect them so they don't hit your inbox)
    3. Change your email password
    4. If nothing else works setup a new email address

    Earlier advice notwithstanding...

It likely has nothing to do with your habits.

apple is very interested in these though

Identifying fraudulent "phishing" email - Apple Support

Identifying legitimate emails from the iTunes Store - Apple Support

They want you to report the email(s) to them by

FORWARD the email to reportphishing@apple.com then DELETE them with Prejudice.

You can never totally escape SPAMmers an PhisherFolk

I use YahooMail which has a VERY robust SPAM filter - I NEVER see these or any other SPAMlike messages

Once your email address has been "given out", sold, or stolen, there isn't much you can do except, as a last resort, abandon/delete that email account and create a new one. You should always have one reserved for "junk" such as online orders, places that insist on you giving them an address, etc. I receive quite a few in my Yahoo account - their spam filters are either worthless or Yahoo lets things slide through purposely (after all, that is about the only way they can make money - through selling advertising) because I get spam FROM my Yahoo email address TO my Yahoo email address. Also, if you do set up an account there, beware: immediately after setting it up, dig down through your account - at some point, you will wind up with a page for advertising/email preferences and all the entries (we will share your address with...) are on by default. Unless you untick them, your address will be shared many times over. And, unless you don't mind people (automated process) reading all your emails, don't use Google/Gmail. They do so to "customize" their advertising for you.
