You can download it from the App Store if you've already purchased a copy. If not then you can't get a copy.
I have Mountain Lion installed on my Macbook Pro and I do not see it in the App store
You will only see it under your purchases if you have downloaded it previously.
If your computer came with Mountain Lion preinstalled, if you use the "internet recovery" feature of your Mac, it will re-download it automatically and start the installation process.
When rebooting your Mac and immediately after hearing the "chime" sound, press CMD+Option+R (CMD+Alt+R) and it will enter internet recovery.
Hope this helps.
I'm having the same issue. I'm on a 2009 MacBook Pro with 10.7.5 and have seen enough reviews of Yosemite that I don't want to go there but would like to upgrade since some apps I've been using that need updates and some new ones I've been looking at need at least 10.8.5.
Buy Mountain Lion from the Apple Store for $20 and redeem it in the App Store app.

I'm having the same question. Still on 10.8 but don't want to go to Yosemite, so Maverick is what I'd like to update to.
How exactly is this going to work? I did buy Mountain Lion a while back, but how can I turn this into a proper Maverick installer? Can you elaborate please?
Is there no download somewhere hidden on the Apple website? I can't believe that Apple is forcing me to update all the way to Yosemite, if I want it or not.
I'd like to update Logic too, which requires minimum OSX 10.9
Yosemite is a no go for me, at least for the moment.
It is Mountain Lion, or Yosemite. Apple has removed the middle (Maverick) ground. Maverick is simply no longer available to those that did not download it from the OS X App Store when they had the chance.
Dear Quicktimekirk,
You mentioned above "if you have already purchased a copy". Does that mean I use my Apple ID to obtain Mavericks? Or, since I have four other iMacs all running Mavericks is there a way to get Mavericks from one of the other iMacs?
If you already purchased it, you can redownload it from the "Purchased" tab on the Mac App Store.
You can download it again - unless your other Macs came with Mavericks pre-installed; in that case, the OS license is for that particular machine only and you can't use it on any other Mac.
This seems to suggest there is a serious security flaw with Maverick. Why else would they not offer the O.S. anymore? Any suggestions as to why?
There are some security improvements in Yosemite. So, they are pushing you to move to Yosemite.
I am certain there is also a business reason for it - to get you hooked and be willing to pay for some service.
I'm running Mavericks on one of my Macs (because of some software that won't run in Yosemite) and there is security issue that I am aware of.
Could you please put an "s" on the end of "Maverick." It's MAVERICKS.
