What if EXPORT ITEMS if grayed out in keychain access?

I have the same problem as I.T.W. I've been trying export my keychain file and no matter what I try the export option is greyed out! I have over 400 passwords I want to export and I really don't want to do them one by one. Does anyone have any idea how to do a simple export??

sadly, "some keychain items" seems to be the understatement of the year. I have not found any exportable items yet. And I have no idea why it should be impossible to export a simple Internet password, e.g., or a secure note.

In other words: "Some keychain items can not be exported." – I already read that in the help text. So please elaborate. Which ones cannot be exported (for example). What are possible reasons? Is there anything I can do about the "non-exportability" of an item? And which ones actually can be exported (for example)?

What is this community for, anyway? If it is NOT POSSIBLE to export all Safari passwords via Keychain Access, WHY DOESN'T ANYONE SAY SO?

It's pathetic—after Googling this question one would expect the Apple Support Community forums to have the answer—but it doesn't. Apple, of course, only comes round to re,jove offensive content—heavens forbid anyone from Apple would actually stop by and ANSWER A QUESTION.

What is the purpose of having "Export Items" in the menu if it is permanently greyed out? Oh, it ISN'T permanently greyed out? Then tell me ONE situation in which it actually works. I'd like to get my hands on the Apple engineer who made it impossible to export all Safari passwords in one go; I can't tell you how many times I have needed to do this and have not been able. APPLE???????

Hi, longtime no see.

Eric, it's not a matter of "not everything." As someone in this thread pointed out, NOTHING can be exported, under any circumstances! Try it—try individually exporting a Keychain item. It will remain greyed out NO MATTER WHAT.

Which led me to my comment about why the item is even in the menu selection. It's like having a menu selection that says "Export $2M to bank account from Steve Jobs's account."

Just ain't gonna happen.

Some keychain items can not be exported. When one or more of these items are selected in Keychain Access, the Export Items menu is dimmed. See this article -

Not everything can be exported according to Keychain Access Help.

I know this is a old post, but here is a SOLUTION 🙂

You are welcome. I agree with you. Before replying, I tried to export several items and was unsuccessful.
