Q: Yosemite/Boot Camp installation hangs.

I had previously set up Windows with Boot Camp before moving to Yosemite and all seemed to work well.

When I no longer needed Windows I deleted it.

I am now trying to reinstall Windows ( I need to somehow update the firmware on my self-installed Crucial SSD, which apparently I cannot do under OS X) but cannot get to the actual Windows install stage of the process. The machine seems reluctant to boot to Windows for the set up.

Boot Camp successfully creates the Boot Camp partition and the USB memory stick with the Windows ISO and support files.

At this point, a message box pops up asking if I want to continue or abort, but before I can do anything the system shuts down and restarts.

On restart, there is no WiFi connection, but otherwise all seems to be OS X normal. There is no pending Windows installation, and on starting Boot Camp all I am able to do is remove the Windows partition.

I tried a reinstall of Yosemite which seemed to go well, but the problem remains.

A very small version of the above mentioned message box seems to remain in the system and appears at certain points. That just confuses me!

The system is relatively new and shouldn't have and oddball utilities or drivers so I'm a little baffled.

    No luck with Crucial.

Lots of views but no replies.

There seem to be a few Mac users who have the problem and some who don't.

It seems the Windows users have lost interest.

I think I am going to wait and see if a solution turns up.

There are a few users reporting degraded performance after upgrading!

Absolutely nothing in response to my post at Crucial.

So, yesterday I took the SSD out and replaced the original HDD.

I purchased the following from Amazon for the princely sum of £15.99 and the SSD works just as well as it did when connected to the SATA port!

The Blackmagic speed test shows virtually the same read speed as before, but the write speed is marginally slower, though not noticeable.

I wish I'd tried that in the first place.

    Thanks for all your help.

It seems Crucial are not too good at supporting Apple users.

Are you able to upgrade firmware on the SSD with this new connector?

Nothing has changed in respect of booting the firmware update from CD or USB flash so I didn't even try it.

I booted up my old Windows PC from CD and the update happened with no fuss.

With the setup I now have, my OS X system is fully portable between my iMac and my Macbook - I simply boot from the USB enclosure and hey presto - everything is there.

The next step could be to look at a thunderbolt to SATA converter. This might offer even higher performance and could protect against any possible USB clashes when USB peripherals are busy.

    Is it worth £100?

    Not sure about that yet.
