Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

Hi everyone one more casualty !!! All of a sudden my MBA early 2014 stop charging , I try to charge when it shows the battery is less than 5% ,didnt charge and after a few minutes it got switched off , tried to do the reset all in vain , Apple service centre person informed it's due to board problem , I can't understand it's less than two year old lap , just after the warrenty period is over  all these issues came . What can we do as of now ? Any lawyers? Anyone  intersted to file a case against Apple , Atleast they have to take a remedy to rectify . Think nearly 90% of MBA customers are facing the same issue .. Let's do something .. Everyone please do join and let's do the needful. Please do reply .. Any advocates here ?

Could you please publish the issue in newspapers or any media , then only Apple will take the necessary steps to rectify it .

You would think this, but with more then a year of failures, i'm sure apple would have rectified it if they were going to.

This won't help those of you that are already affected, but I would suggest that anyone who owns a Macbook Atr (or any other MacBook as far as that goes) as I do. Do nor allow the battery to fall below 10%. I keep mine charged up at all times and only use the battery when there is no electrical power source nearby. I have heard that Apple offers a $300 total repair option in the US. It is not advertised, and you may have to do some digging to find information on it, but it is worth a shot. $300 dollars beats $800 any day. Good luck to everyone. I feel your pain over this issue.

My MBA didn't turn on and when I took it to the "authorized reseller" for repair they plugged a new power source and it worked. A month later it wouldn't start again. Plugging a different power adapter didn't work and now they said it's the logic control board... sure it's 3 years old but I have Windows laptops (one that i'm using now to research this issue) that are 10 years old and no issues at all!

I call Apple Support and basically i'm SOL. How does a motherboard die? And how is there not a recall on this??

I also had this problem with my 2013, 13 inch- MacBook Air, bought in Brazil. A couple weeks ago the logic board just stopped with no reason. Took it to assistance and they gave me no explanation why did it stop. The cost to replace it is extremely high. I am very disappointed with the product. Neve expected to brake with only 3 years of use and have no solution from Apple.

So basically, we all have this problem. The issue occurred a while back all of the sudden, I had put it in the sleep mode and it won't just start. Although if I keep pressing the power button multiple times, it would start at some point. Bought it in 2014 and it's Mid-2013 model. Not going to replace the **** Logic Board, done with MAC too.

I have the same problem. I couldn't charge my early 2014 MBA , thinking there's a problem with the charger, but found out the motherboard is broken! Apple store told me the cost to replace it is around 300$. That's disappointing! I used to have a Dell Inspiron and I used it almost 24/7 and it worked properly more than for 4 years for me, It's still alive!

I am facing a similar problem with my MBA - purchased via amazon.com in Dec 2014. The MLB was replaced in India in Sep 2015 under warranty and the executive at the service centre said that he has seen many MBAs are having similar MLB issues.Again after 4 months my MBA went dead so I took it to a service centre and then it started. Dead again after a month and then they said it is because of moisture . I got it repaired and then it went dead again the same night. Now they say it needs a MLB replacement again !! I had this matter escalated to the highest level but there is no resolution except that you will have to pay the price of a new MLB since its out of warranty.

Is there a consumer forum that we can visit ? If anyone knows of a procedure, let us all follow it and take this forward. This cannot be the state of affairs after buying a premium product!

    same thing people

just 13 days after expiry of my macbook air 13 early 2015 it decided not to turn on and wasnt charging either.

the cost of replacement is 43k which is absurd.

i bought my mac from amazon.

i am a college student and for me it is not possible to pay such an amount.

my fathers iphone was bought also from a reputed online store and also faced a problem.

lot of people buying apple products from india are facing a lot of issues. the cost of repairing is also very high.

i think there is something fishy going on.

i am desperate for a solution or i will have to go college without a computer which is very tough since i am a computer science student. but thank god i am not the only one with these issues. not expected this from apple. if any action will be   taken i willsupport. thankyou

    Hi Guys,

I also had same issue, I am from India and had brought Macbook Air 11 in Sep' 14. I am going through same problem.

    The sequence of event is as below;

    1. 5 days before my laptop suddenly turned OFF and when i was trying to Power it ON back, it was allowing me to go till Login windows and it was turning OFF again, which repeated 4-5 times,,.
    2. I kept it OFF for half an hour and tried to login back , my Macbook started working again and it gave me relif.
    3. But suddenly after 2 days, same thing happen and only Login sound was playing without displaying anything
    4. I gave more attempt to power it ON back, and found slowly Login sound was also disappeared and only FAN was running, which can hear from outside
    5. When I took it Authorized service center in my Town, its stopped even running FAN.

I left my Air with service center, and Today I got call by them saying Logic board has been Damaged and I need to pay Rs. 24,000 (Around 350$), which is almost 40% amount of original price of new Macbook. I was shocked by hearing the same.

We do purchase things looking at brand name by assuming that they wont compromise with quality, but hearing story of many here, it looks like its an serious issue with product and lot of people are facing.

I had similar issue with my brother iPhone6, whose Speaker stopped working just after 15 days his warranty period got expired.

There is no point in buying such expensive product if they are going to FAIL immediately after Warranty period.

really, Disappointed with Quality of Apple product now. Don't know what to do ??

Still another disappointed user. i purchased a Macbook Air at Best buy in August of 2014. It is out of warranty and I let  it go to sleep and now it is dead. I have tried everything! A board by itself is 300.00 plus. So a 1000.00 later, I have no computer and a hefty repair or a laptop replacement. From the sound of the issues, users are having, why replace the board? I definitely think there should be a recall... Apple users?
