Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

i have a MACBOOK AIR 13"  of 2,5 years old. I did not  use this laptop because I had another laptop for own company. I only used the macbook for download pictures and make backups for my iPhone or iPad. Well, the last time that i used my MacBook Air was 4 months ago and when I want to use in June, the laptop was died. Total: logic board and battery failure. I spent 708 eur in tis repair and I spoke with APPLE about this issue. Apple told me  that they could give me a good solution but the didn´t. I am ver disappointed with relation CLIENT-APPLE. I never think that a MACBOOK lives minus than 3 year with 50h of use.

    very disappointed...

    Same with me.

Purchased the apple macbook air 2015 early edition an year back. It's been a month over after the warranty period and now as per service support mlb...motherboard or main logic board needs to be replaced for 45K INR. bought for 64k INR. Spent 2.6K INR for diagnostics for a big shock.

Seems other brands far far better in this respect. Feel Myself befooled under a big brand name.

For every issue they say that the MLB needs to be changed. They seem to change MLB for any and all the issue instead of diagnosing the real problem. They did the same to me. Quoted 48k for repairing. I denied their service and took it to a third party service. They fixed it in seconds without even opening the macbook. Even in your case, they simply would have said to change the MLB. They dont have technicians but those who just knows how to change MLB and Rip the consumers apart. How on earth they expect people to pay 48k repair charge for 62k laptop!!! I suggest you to wait for a week until your macbook dries up... then try powering up. If it does not help, please consult third party service, but not Apple!!

Is there any possible to initiate a class action for these issues?

I have an early 2015 MBA 13" too, two months past the one year warranty and the logic board failed out of the blue.

is there anyway we can get Apple to repair it for free? I hardly used it and it died without a single fault of mine. have always been a loyal Apple user but very disappointed this time.

I just experienced the same problem.  What is really infuriating about this situation is that only the Apple Store or a certified dealer can run the diagnostics that can tell you what component of the mother (logic) board has failed.  However, they are not allowed to fix the problem. They are only allowed to replace the entire board.  An independent computer repairman could fix the component, but Apple will not allow them to have the diagnostic tools to identify the component that failed.

Same story here. My Macbook Air was purchased on Aug 11th 2015 and went bust on Aug 3rd 2016. I was in a city in India where there is no Apple store so I could only take it in to the store on Aug 12th 2016 due to personal commitments. They charged me INR 2600 to investigate the cause and then gave me an estimate of INR 42000 for the logic board replacement. Note that this is very close to the cost of a new laptop. They wouldn't budge on the policy even when its only a matter of a day and I have valid reasons!

I hope to speak to someone higher up who has the authority to consider my device under warranty given the circumstances, and especially given this is a common problem.

Hey did you end up getting this fixed? I live in NZ and have the exact same problem, Mac air was also bought in 2014 and just over 2 years old. I heard we may have rights under Consumer Guarantees Act that guarantees that an appliance should work for a reasonable amount of time, although I'm not sure if 2 years can count as "reasonable amount of time ." Let me know!
