Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

I also recently experienced a logic board failure on my 2014 MBA.  I took it to a local repair shop for the diagnosis and they claimed that the cost to repair it will be close to the price of a new laptop.  I am going to try my luck at the Apple store tomorrow and see if they offer me any assistance.  It was purchased new in July 2014 so it is not covered by warranty anymore.  I am very disappointed by this and it has been a huge inconvenience for me.  All of my other mac/Apple products have been fantastic and very reliable so I definitely did not expect this one to die after a year and a half.  Good luck to the others on this thread.

My problem is that I bought the laptop in Asia while on holidays  so I don't have any EU protection although I am a EU citizen.

To the point. the posts seems to indicate that this is a reasonably common defect even for 2014 MBA and apple (regarless of place of purchaes) should take responsibility but maybe I am too naive.

I have had at least 5 mac computers in my life. I had two ibooks die in law school. I switched to HP. HP was okay. Then I went back to mac. I have had a 2013 mba for a little over 2.5 years. It died!!!!

I am really stoic about it because I just can't believe it. All my mac laptops have died. over 5 macs in 20 years and two PCs!

    How can this be possible.

I am really disappointed at the integrity of the company.

I don't know how much I am going to have to pay for replacing the logic board but it isn't going to be easy as I live on a little island in the pacific. No mac store.

Going to figure out legal issues for this.

Oh crap. I just googled this as an issue because my early 2014 Macbook air is starting to glitch up. I know from experience that this can be a 'typical macbook' logic board issue because I bought this computer to replace a  macbook pro 2013 brick when that logic board died after 1.5 years after it got similarly glitchy. I was 6 months too early to qualify for the recall and the repair was going to cost me more than this computer. If this thing now dies for the same reason, I am going to be really furious. My mom's desktop Mac, also had the same **** problem.

Apple cannot act like any of this is a surprise, when within our family, where we own 5 Apple computers, three have experienced this problem after less than 2 years of use. And the scary thing is that they are 3 completely different models.

I swore after the last recall -- that came only after a lawsuit -- that this macbook air would be the last Apple computer I would buy. This is pretty much sealing the deal. Now just making sure I have everything backed up to be restored in alternative ways and I will wait to see how long this will survive.

The tell-tale glitches I am getting? On start up a series of lines across the grey screen before the Apple appears. The computer 'freezes' intermittently and I have to either wait a few minutes or restart. There is also some 'screen' jittering.

None of these issues is worth paying the high price of Apple computers and then the additional cost of having pricy insurance. I don't know how these issues do not get the company more bad publicity. They built their profile on quality, but the computers they have been turning out since 2013 have been awful.

Hey...CALL APPLE SUPPORT NOW! Tell them your story. I called Apple and told them my story and I was passed to the top apple advisor who said he wanted to keep a devoted mac user. He mailed me a computer box overnight. I sent my computer in asap overnight. It was fixed the day it was received and it is on it's way home. The cost: $200.00 for labor. All parts were comped!  They don't have to do this, however, I was really bummed and at my wits end because of the losses over the years.

    sicklogicboardagain,

the reason Apple does not get more bad publicity around this is simple: they delete posts which are get them into lawsuit

Two days ago I posted on this thread something which was suggesting to put ourselves together and do something about the situation. This is what I received in my inbox:

    Apple Support Communities
    Hi  stoian_marius,
Thanks for participating in Apple Support Communities.

We removed your post Re: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure because it contained a poll or a petition.

We understand wanting to share experiences, but these forums are meant for technical questions that can be answered by the community.

I’ve included a copy of your original post below.

    Thanks, Apple Support Communities Staff

So... I will not post the content of my previous post so they will not have a reason to delete this one also,

but I will use the occasion to tell "Apple Support Communities Staff" (they sent email from noreply@apple.com) that I have filled a complaint with BBB already.

    Some logical conclusions:

So... yes... they monitor our discussions carefully.

So...yes... they know about the issue. And because it's a design error they see the lawsuit coming.

    Four more question for Apple:

    1. Do you think so much frustration on this thread will just simply vanish? All the time anger and frustration generate strong reaction.

    2. Do you know how frustrating it is to pay 2000$ for a MBA and then to be in a country( on which you have really bad tech support - India) because your logic board has failed, and you have no working computer for 1 month? (I write this from internet cafe)

    3. Are you prepared to pay for compensation also? Not just the logic board.

    4. Not the least important... Do you know how much frustrating is to go thru all this and not being able to talk to someone from your side? (sending me emails from noreply@apple.com?!?!?!? Really? )

    RIP MBA 2014.

Born into our family July 2014, left quietly in the night Nov 2015.  She was gone far too soon.  She lived a short life, an easy life.  An over-priced machine, used for light grad school work and lots of internet surfing.  A perfect fit into the Apple dominated lifestyle of our home.  MBA joined older siblings iMac 2007, ipad (3 & 4th gen), ipad mini, ipod touch, iphone 6 (who went for a toilet swim this week and whose fate has yet to be determined).   MBA was the portable, workhorse of the family and will be sorely missed.

Apples warranty is world wide regardless of where you bought it. If someone is telling you otherwise, your getting a song and a dance. Only difference is ,you are the original owner. Or if it had apple care ,the apple care was transferred to you when you bought it. One year of apple care comes with it and if more is wanted, you must purchase it. This does not apply to every apple product, but it does on computers. My thought on the dead battery is: leave it plugged into the magsafe for 24 hours or more before trying to start it and see if it comes back. Then you can do the SMC reset and also a Pram reset.Which is: Command/Option/P/R keys and power button for three chimes at startup. If the battery won't come back, replace it, because new batteries come with a charge. Then do the SMC reset and pram reset. The batteries that apple puts in laptops do have memory.

HI , I also found out today that my MacBook Air mid 2013  has to have motherboard changed ! It was working well like usual . Before going to bed I plugged it in to charge . I tried to power it up in the morning and NOTHING !!! The chargeer light was green ,but like you all it would not owner up !!! i then proceeded to look up on my iphone what could be going on !! I tried all the suggested steps to try and get it to power up !!

WHen that didn't work I contacted Apple through messaging . They also asked me to do the same steps that I had already tried but once again without any success ! The Apple person suggested that I bring my MacBook Air into an Apple Store Genius Bar to get it checked out ! So I called Apple Store to schedule an appointment!

WEll I did that today only to be told it was my motherboard that needed changing ! I bought the MacBook Air in February 2014 !!! I am not financially able to fork out that much money at the time with the holidays and all .

I Am just Po'ed that I have only owned it for less than 2 yrs !!!

Hopefully Apple will do something about this problem as I see I am not alone in this situation!!!

I felt betrayed today when I received a quote of 38,000 INR to replace the Logic board of my 14 month old MBA ( 2014 model ).

This is clearly my first and last Apple product. Please let me know if there is a cheaper way to get the beautiful piece of brick working again. Thank you.

Ya that's true the, same issue is happening with my LOGIC BOARD, Macbook Pro 2012, 13inch model.

It was perfectly working alright but suddenly it wasn't charging and the laptop did not boot up and i visited the Apple service centre they are charging me 750$. I had never dropped my laptop down, if i knew this would happen i would have got the Apple care protection 2yrs before.

Apple must look into this issue and offer a Recall for the Logic board for free, since lots of people are experiencing problems with the Logic Board

    Hello,

i have the same issue as well but with my Macbook Pro,  (13-inch, 2012) Model

i would recommend apple to consider a recall for the above said problem because customer without apple care are charged a **** lot of money about 760$.

    Unhappy customer

    @apple!!...

I have the same issue with my Macbook Pro (13-inch,2012) model, it was working good for the past 2.3years. But suddenly it had issue with my Logic board, i didn't have it covered under apple care.

From this form discussion i notice that lots of people are having the same issue after 2 years.

I request apple to look on to the issue and offer a recall for the Logic board for the MacBook Pro, 13-inch (mid 2012) model

The 2012s should be covered under the Mac book pro recall of machines from 2011-2013.
