Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

Maybe we should start a petition to persuade Apple to replace their faulty logic boards at least within three years of purchase. Anyone know how?

Its very sad that Apple didn't come up with any solution for this issue. My MAC air 13" Logic board also has some issue. I taken it to apple authorized service center. they said to replace Logic board, needs around 45K (750$). Its only been 2 years from the date of purchase. If there is no guarantee on the life of apple products then why do we need to buy Apple products. We could have gone for some cheap products in the market. Highly disappointed with the Trust i had on Apple. They should take all the mac air that has problem and return it with new/replaced one.

I've just been given a brand new replacement and it is early 2015 instead of my former early 2014 so hopefully the logic board problem has been resolved.  It looks to me like there were a whole load of faulty logic boards late 2013 early 2014. A strange aspect of this is that so many respondents had the breakdown just after the two year warranty expired. A British man just won a court case over a cracked Apple watch but he won on the fact that Apple had said it was crack-proof and it cracked after a few weeks so wrongly described, which is a different issue to a faulty product. I love the Macbook Air but I wouldn't buy one again because the cost of repair is so high compared with the Pro.

Hi, again me. I already wrote one post here about what happened, so i am going back to my case. My MBA 2012 logic board died after 2 years, once being replaced for new one, it worked again for year and half. Now it happened again, in apple store they offered me to pay 450 euro for repair because now it was out of warranty. I refused to pay that. Then my boyfriend tried to talk with some people on support chat of apple, he spoke with one guy from Barcelona, this guy redirected him to someone from America and then they talked for like another hour. After this he reconnected us to someone else but on phone call back here in Spain, then we were transferred to boss of this person on another phone call. Then they asked for all documents to send to his email. Two days later the same person called from Irish number to tell us that this is obviously not our fault and they will repair it in Barcelona (our nearest apple store) for free.

I was happy to hear that, so dont give up and keep trying to demand your rights.

Also have the problem with logic board. Already from start I have problems with my macbook air early 2014, they say that there is nothing wrong. Did all resets and re install, now warranty is over they say you need a new logic board. Buying a Apple Macbook Air in 2013/2014 looks like buying just rubbish...

Guys exact same issue. My 2013 Oct bought MBA 11 inch mlb went kaput 3 months back. Gave it to apple service and came back with lots of disappointment. Guys in India, can we file it to consumer forum given so many case have been reported? Apple support centre is good for nothing and neither is the after sales.

My macbook air, a1466 model, has the same problem. I bought mine on January 12, 2015, after a year of use it stopped working. I took in an authorized and they told me it was problem on the logic board, which was cheaper I buy a new one. This should be a problem of manufacturing, as already seen several situations just like ours.

I am very disappointed with Apple. I see this problem on the logic board with several people around the world and they do not take any action.

I wish I had checked these posts before deciding to buy Apple.

I too faced similar problem around Jan 2016 and it is just out of warranty. I installed a game for my son (and also enabled parental control for limiting the time). Once the battery drained completely when put to sleep. Then MAC wouldn't turn on even when connected to charger for long time. After a week, I took it to Apple repair centre and when I opened there, it turned on and worked without issues (battery at 100%). The technician ran hardware diagnostics and told there is no issues.

It was working fine for a few days and then the problem came back again (wouldn't power on). This time the service centre person tested and told me that the MLB is faulty and needs to be replaced (apparently when he changed MLB, it worked - no component level debugging done). This will cost INR 45K which is more than half the cost of original laptop. I am yet to make a decision

I am really disappointed with Apple for such a poor quality product.

    Parvetaja -

I am having the exact same problem.

I purchased my MBA in the USA in January of 2015.  This past weekend, Saturday February 27th (2016), my logic board failed.  The cost to replace it is 850 Singapore dollars.  I kept very good care of this laptop.  It was kept clean, not put on unstable surfaces, always powered on and off correctly, and the battery was never allowed to die.  There is no way that the logic board failure was due to mistreatment.

Similar to another poster, I purchased a higher end computer from Apple in the hopes that it would last a long time, considering the reputation for reliability.  There are several people on this thread who are experiencing this exact problem.  It's a little strange that all of us are saying that the logic board is failing just after the warranty expires.

Does anyone know of contact information for Apple so ask about a recall?

It is outrageous but I am not sure what we can do about it.  Maybe we could start a group action against Apple.  Is anyone out there a lawyer who could start it off?  Once we get a lawyer then we can start posting news of the group action on our social media, which will be world wide judging by the breadth of disappointment across the world reflected in this string. I'm a journalist so I could publicise it as well.
