Router config can't detect printer

Network configuration:

Router brand: Netcomm
Router model: NB620W. Includes print server with USB port.

Previously: a succession of D-Link routers, all with print server using parallel port.

Printer brand: Epson
Printer model: SC740. Parallel & USB interfaces.

Apple machines: (see below). iMacs via ethernet; others wireless.
Also on network: 1 PC with WinXP, via ethernet.

Problem:

Can't find a way to network the printer served from the new router. But same printer has worked like a charm served from the previous routers.

Details:

• SC740 is on Netcomm's list of compatible printers for this router.

• No problem configuring router through any browser on any OS at 192.168.1.1. But it's clear that the router can't detect the printer at all. Printer is on and plugged into USB port on router. But the printer panel within the router config browser reads:
Printer Status

Printer Model : None

Printer Status : off-line

• None of our computers can find the printer to create a printer file from, when connected to router. Have tried numerous manually created device URIs, configurations, protocols, etc without success.

• No problem sharing the same printer from one of the macs to all other machines on network.

• USB ports (2) on router obviously work. (Router config can recognise a memory stick as a storage volume through either port.)

• If I try to print from any machine (using my manually created printer files) the spooling works fine, but then I get an error message about printer being busy (try again later, etc.)

• Support guy at Netcomm has run out of ideas. Says it's almost unheard of for the router not to detect any printer. Said there are rare cases of individual printer models using a different protocol or something.

My questions:

• Does anyone have any experience of using an SC740 through a USB print server?

• Could this be all a matter of finding the right URI string?

• Any other suggestions?

• Can some kind geek help me?! ( NB: My fluency in geekspeak is limited.)

Macmini 1.5G & iBook1.2G Mac OS X (10.4.8) Also in house: imac333 & imac350, both running 10.3.9

Normal IP printing on OS X isn't "browseable" - you have to tell it the location of the printer. The computer won't "find" a TCP/IP printer -- unless it is Bonjour-enabled (mDNS-enabled).

I think you just need to know what info to enter into OS X Printer Setup.

IP printer > LPD > enter lp1 or lp2 for queue name > enter IP address of router > choose model Epson SC740, Gimp-Print.
(reference: pg 59 & 64 of the router manual)

Then I'd be looking in the Web admin pages for a possible print server on/off setting or a possible change to the queue name setting (some print servers allow you to set that).

(and make sure you were following my instructions verbatim - like lower case lp1 (el-pee-one or two), LPD protocol not IPP, etc.)

After that, it's back to the store for an exchange.

Good luck.

OK. Connected other printer (HP Deskjet 3745). Unlike the SC740 the router config can definitely see it. (Printer panel in router admin can tell me there's a connected printer, correctly identifies the model, and says it's online. With the SC740 it says there's no printer there.)

But that's where the good news ends. Still can't get printing happening. With some URIs I tried I get another 'busy' message. With other URIs it looks like it's actually going to print, does the spooling correctly, but then the job just vanishes from the queue window and nothing happens. Not a sound from the printer.

I've tried various strings with both ipp & lpd, with and without "/lp1" at the end, with and without ":515" after the IP

Other suggestions?

Just to report that this isn't really solved, and probably won't be. But after exhausting my efforts with URI strings I've taken your advice and sent it back to the manufacturer for either a firmware fix or a refund.

And I've picked up an Airport Extreme BS secondhand on ebay. No fiddling, setup in minutes, wish I'd done it years ago instead of trying to save money (what a joke!) with cheaper 3rd party routers.
