Connect Macbook Air (Mid-2013) to External Display

I have a Mid-2013 Macbook Air 2013 and I'm trying to get it to properly connect to my new external display, an HP Pavilion 25xi. I've plugged in a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable connecting the two, but the resolution on the external display looks terrible. When I first plugged them all in, the resolution was fine, but today, just a few days later, the resolution looks like a pixelated off color 1990s monitor.

The closest thing I could find to a solution was this - http://embdev.net/topic/284710 - but there has to be a simpler solution.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), HP Pavilion 25xi

Hello sanclementejoe,

Have you tried the troubleshooting in the article below? Start with Reset the system section as well as checking the resolution on the display in System Preferences.
