Urdu Typing on Mac

Hi all,

I am very new to the computer side of Apple. I have an iphone and ipod but am looking for the triple-whammy, a macbook pro/macbook air.

Now part of my work entails me typing/browsing/searching in the urdu language. One thing I really desperately need help in is a simple question; is Urdu typing possible on mac? Especially on mac's MS Word?

If not, what do I do? Should mac be avoided in my line of work (someone who needs urdu and english on a 50:50 ratio)?

Or,

is there an easy way to go about it? (Please make it easy...😕)

I will take it step-by-step, so first question first.

Regards...

MS Word Mac cannot do Urdu or any RTL or Indic script, but every other Mac app should work OK. Common replacements for Word are Mellel, Pages 5, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, Open/LibreOffice.

To type Urdu in OS X you go to system preferences/keyboard/input sources and use the plus and add buttons to add the Urdu keyboard provided by Apple. Then you select it in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and type away.

If you absolutely must use Word, then you should stay with Windows machines. MS has had 14 years to add RTL to Word for Mac and nobody knows if they will ever do it.
