Not connecting to some WiFi

I am having trouble logging to a couple of WiFi accounts at local Coffee shops. They give me the password and when I enter this it appears to be trying to access it. A spinning circle keeps running and it never connects. This is happening with my new iPad Air 2 and also my iPhone. I guess I have some setting not done correct? Can someone help?
