Thanks for the fast answer. My floppy is not working, and it seems that i have to remove the analog board to install a new one. Is there any way to buy a external floppy and use it with a serial port? I already have the system 6 soft.

Another question: I have tried the keys you told me but nothing happened...The mouse is working but Maybe the keyboard is dead. Is there any way to test it? every time i boot the happy mac face appears and then the sign " System 7.1 need more memory to run " and the restart button.

Thanks is advance!

An external floppy drive for the DB-19 floppy port is not very common. It may be easier to replace a bad internal floppy drive.

An LC III is mentioned in your profile. It should be possible to copy System 6.x.x from existing 800K floppies onto an external SCSI hard drive at the LC III. The external SCSI hard drive could be used to boot the SE. An external SCSI hard drive could also be a SCSI Zip drive with a properly formatted Zip (100) disk.

For a test you could run the SE with only the mouse connected. Have you tried the keyboard with the LC III (however, if you suspect that a damaged ADB port in the SE has been caused by the keyboard, do not use it any more)?

Jan, now that i have my LCIII working, can you help me to install the system 6 on my macintosh SE that don't have the floppy working?

This is my scenario:

Mac LC III no HD working. The floppy is working. I can use the finder with system tools disk. Mouse and keyboard working

Mac SE asking me for more RAM to use system 7.1. HD working, I want to install system 6 on this one. The floppy is not working. Mouse and keyboard working.

Thanks in advance as always.

Carlos,

One way could possibly be the following:

What about moving the SCSI hard drive in the SE to the LC III to begin with? Remove the old existing LC III hard drive and install the other one. Then install a System 7.1 onto the hard disk in the LC III (assuming that you have modified the system disk set with the required system enabler). It may be sufficient to just drag-copy the system folder from the System 7.1 Disk Tools to the hard disk. Restart. This should mean that the LC III contains a hard drive with a working System 7.1, and that the floppy drive is free for transfers.

Next, copy the System 6 floppy disks to the hard disk inside the LC III. This should result in separate folders for each floppy. Make sure that one folder contains a valid System 6 system folder.

Still on the LC III, rename the System 7.1 System Folder (call it something like "OLD System Folder") and move the System suitcase out of it (place the System suitcase in an empty new folder on the hard disk). This should mean that there is a fully functional hard disk with System 6 (but this may also be the weak point, since we cannot know for sure that any blessing of the system folder will last). Look upon all this as an experiment.

Finally switch off the LC III and move the hard drive back to the SE.

It may also be a good idea to copy some other applications to the hard disk at the same time. For example, System 6-compatible programs for communication (terminal emulators), decompression (StuffIt Expander), disk image handling, etc.

Via a simple null-modem connection, files can later be transferred to/from the Macintosh SE even without a working floppy drive.

Jan I saw in other threat that is there a chance that the HD may no be detected: this is my problem. How can I do to solve this? I have all the disk of system 7, also I used system disk tools but I can't see the HD...

Normally, start the computer with the appropriate disk in the floppy drive. If there is another system folder on the hard disk, it has to be removed before attempting to install System 6.0.8. Then run the installer.

If a hard disk cannot be detected, it may be necessary to reformat/initialise via the HD SC Setup utility first. Please note that this will erase everything, so make sure that backup copies exist of important files.

If there is a problem with the floppy disks, System 6.0.8 is available for download from Apple in both 800K and 1.44 MB disk versions. Disk Copy 4.2 (the Make A Copy button) is used to create properly sector-copied floppies from the disk images.

You may want to do an Internet search for something like "repair Macintosh SE" or "replace Macintosh SE hard drive" in an attempt to locate exact information before any work is done internally. The usual warning: All work inside a compact Mac can be very dangerous, and must only be carried out by someone with the necessary expertise. There are high-voltage circuits that can carry current for a long time after the computer has been switched off.
