Why can't I see my applications in finder after upgrading to Yosemite?
I upgraded to Yosemite and now my applications do not appear in finder. How do I fix this?

If you don't see any applications then how did you get Safari started? It would help if you were more precise as to what the problem is. What applications don't appear in your Finder? Did you open the Finder on the Applications folder?
Well, first of all, Safari is located on the dock. That's how I got Safari open. Although I am a new user of Yosemite I've been using mac computers for over 7 years. So, I'm not a complete moron. Yosemite seems to be a bit inconsistent on my computers. In Finder on my mac desktop computer there is, on the left side, the heading "Devices", in which my mac and my macbook pro are listed. Here the macbook is called "Remote Disc". On the macbook the heading "Devices" is not present. Instead there is the heading "Shared". Here I can see the mac listed but, not the macbook. So, the hard drive for the macbook is not listed in Finder, on the macbook. On the macbook I did attempt to locate the applications folder under my user name, which is listed under Favorites. There I find a folder named Applications but, it appears to be empty. When I click on it nothing appears. I have discovered a work-around though. I can locate my Applications folder by clicking on the hard drive icon on the right side of the desk top of the macbook. So, since I have been able to locate the Applications folder there I have decided not to worry about trying to locate it in Finder. If I were still worried about it, would that be enough information for you? Is that precise enough? I was trying to keep it brief. I didn't want to write a novel.
The applications folder is located when using Finder:
in the menu bar: Go > Applications
using the keyboard command: Command Shift A
click on Applications on the side bar on the right hand side of a finder window
I got fooled by the new Finder settings myself. Or maybe they aren't new, just newly discovered on my part after years of Mac usage. As you found, I discovered the Application folder for User/Me is empty. The root application folder has all the apps. Who knew... 😉
Ha. Been that way since day one of OS X. There should not even be an Applications folder in your Home folder. Glad you got this sorted out.
Finder/Preferences/Sidebar and check Applications under Favorites.
That's an excellent tip Eric Root. I never even thought about going that route. So often I forget about that top bar. I don't think that I've ever gone there in Finder before.
Thank you. You are welcome.
Sure, the root Application folder has the apps for use by all users. That's where it's been since I used Cheeta or Hera. The user app folder can segregate applications for only single user access. It's actually in spec and can be found in some installations based on an app installer. In my case Parallels or some other app I've installed over time created it and I never noticed it until quickly clicking an Application folder and finding it empty, which caused me to look at file paths. So it's not true that there shouldn't be an Application folder within the User folder. There might be one. Which was why I posted in support of BChancey.
