iPhoto not launching

Just migrated across to new iMac OS X 10.9.3 and now iPhoto responding with "Photo Library needs to be upgraded" when I click Upgrade it just sends me back to Home screen with no upgrade process being triggered? How do I fix this so I can launch iPhoto? just want to complete the upgrade ?

Thanks Eric - I tried this process and selected the option to "Rebuild" - it comes up with an "Upgrade" button which I click and then it flashes up "Examining photo library" and then quits iPhoto and back to home screen with no progress. Same problem I was encountering the first time. I have also now upgraded the OS to Yosemite and it gives the same responses. Help???
