Display won't turn on

2014 mb pro 15" retina, Yosemite. Screen went black in the middle of use. There is a "schtick" sound (and a possible burning smell if real close) from the upper corner of the keyboard when you open the lid or press the power button. A long press on the power button will cause the startup chime and the keyboard to light up, but nothing else. Have already tried resetting the NVRAM and the SMC. Seems to be charging okay.

Hi kiiitanai,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you have nothing showing on the display of your MacBook Pro and you have already completed some great troubleshooting steps by resetting the NVRAM and the SMC. There are some further troubleshooting steps that I would recommend as well including starting in Safe Mode. Please use the attached article for further troubleshooting for this situation.
