Q: Permanently Unread Messages

My macbook Messages is synced with my phone text messages.  I now have two messages that are stuck marked as unread.  When I click on them, the blue unread indicator disappears for a second, then reappears very soon after.  One of the conversations I tried deleting, when I right click the app on the doc, the phone number is still listed indicated as unread, but when I click it it takes me nowhere.  Is there any way to fix this bug?

    Hi,

With the App open go to the Applications/Utilities folder and launch the Activity Monitor app.

In the list find the item for the DOCK.

highlight it and then use the Quit icon top left.

    Confirm Force Quit.

It will restart immediately and appear at the top of the list again (you will notice the Dock disappear and reappear)

This should remove th red indicator on the app icon.

Now selecting the chat should also remove the blue dot.

No luck.  The red indicator is still present, when right clicking the 2 unread messages are shown.

    Hi,

Can you open either of those Messages from the DOCK icon ?

(I would guess that they are from a deleted chat(s) and that you can't)

    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.

Restart the computer and Hold down CMD+ALT+P+R keys until you have heard three Start up Bongs in Total then let th Start complete.

I have this problem too, except I don't have a macbook and the problem is on my iphone. I've restarted it many times and deleted the conversation. It only happens for a single contact and keeps happening with new texts.

    Hi,

Even though the symptoms appear to be the same that are not.

Technically, and somewhat semantically I know, they are on different devices running different apps (albeit with the same name) on a different OS.

having said that there are now three known fixes on the Mac version.

2 involve ending the Dock Process either in Activity Monitor or the Terminal App.  The other involves tuning Off Notifications for the Messages app in the System Preferences > Notifications.

In the Mac version you set the option for Banners to none and turn Off every other option (Sound and Dock being the most demonstrative) whilst the Messages app is running.

    Then Quit the Messages app.

Close System Preferences and restart the computer before Restarting the Messages app.

It would seem this would be the most likely thing to work on the iPhone.
