Jan 12, 2015 8:04 AM in response to Mike Sombrioby Valerie Mcmillen,Yes, have done all of that. The hardware test actually will not run, I have a 2009 intel Imac, running Yosemite, I shut down, hold the D key and it just boots up as normal, will not do the hardware test. Aggravating, but am out of ideas otherwise.

Apple WatchIn order to run AHT you need to insert disc 2 of your original gray install set and restart while holding D. You have the original discs yes?

Apple WatchWhen running AHT you should run it two or more times in extended mode. AHT isn't the greatest or most reliable tool but it's the best we users have. If you've looked at Activity Monitor for something using a lot of processor and didn't see anything perhaps the best course of action would be to visit the nearest Apple Store or AASP for a more through diagnostic.

Jan 12, 2015 11:07 AM in response to Mike Sombrioby Valerie Mcmillen,I have done activity monitor with NOTHING running at all, and the fans are still on and nothing really showing up. Very aggravating. While still under apple care, I had the hard drive and fans all replaced, it's been one year and 2 months, now the fan is running again at high speed. I contacted apple, but they say sorry, bring it in. Unfortunately, there is no Apple store near me, or an authorized repair. Guess I am hiking to Syracuse! thanks for trying!
