Server update from 10.9 to 10.10 fails

Have a Mac Mini server that is currently running 10.9.5 server. Would like to update it to 10.10 with server software.

Have run in to two problems:

1. the update would download then error out that the download had been tampered with.

2. moving the download from another computer would start to install but give errors that the essentials package had problems installing.

Tried installing 10.10 with the server software from scratch on a spare drive and it runs just fine.

Is there a way to migrate the server settings/network users/Groups.... from the old drive to the spare drive?

If at all feasible, I would try the following:

Back up and ensure your backup(s) are good

First option:

- Download the full 10.10.x installer from Apple (i.e. rather than the updater) and then run it

- Download Server 4x and install it

Second (highly drastic) option (and the one I've just employed to resolve a number of irritating issues; hopefully you won't need this because it's a lot of work

- Download the 10.10.x installer and make a bootable external drive with it

- Use Carbon Copy Cloner or similar to back up your server

- Back up separately key configuration data from your server

- Boot from the 10.10 install disk you made

- Erase the server hard drive and install 10.10

- Install Server 4x and restore files you need from your CCC clone

- There are specific items in the Server config that you need to make sure you can recreate: Open Directory database, DNS settings and others.
