No matter what I do in PSE13 or similar I cannot get the hang of fitting an image to fit perfectly as desktop wallpaper. I tried everything and I'm whacked out and failing totally miserably.

Pleaseeeee help an old aged pensioner crack this stupid thing.

Fitting the image exactly to the display resolution in pixels usually means cropping or resizing your images to the precise number of pixels

For a 21.5" iMac, those dimensions are 1920 wide by 1080 tall.

You can check this on your own system

, About This Mac, More Info, Graphics/Displays

I'm running OS X 10.8 on this machine, so the sequence after More Info... might have different wording on OS X 10.6

Doubling or halving both numbers can also work, depending upon the resolution of the original item.

so 960x540 can work if the original source is high enough.

EDIT: Also, there are options for 'fit to screen', 'fill screen', and 'stretch to fill screen' in , System Preferences, Desktop & Screen Saver, that can simplify the process if your original is CLOSE to the screen resolution.
