Q: Login to icloud drive from ipad / backup individual photos only

I'm looking to use icloud drive to backup individual RAW images from my Sony camera. I'm thinking to load those images from my camera to the ipad then copy those images to icloud drive to store there. After that I would delete the images from the ipad. I'm not looking for the photo app to automatically sync all the photos on my ipad to icloud.

I've set up my icloud drive account from my mac and all looks ready to go, but i find if I try to login to icloud from the ipad I don't get the login dialog page but the apple instruction to setup the ipad. The ipad is setup like I want:

icloud photo library is off

my photo stream is off

icloud photo sharing is on

Problem with photo stream is that it is automatic. I want to select individual files or folders to load to icloud, not everything automatically.

Thanks anyone for any tips!

You can access your iCloud Drive from your phone through any installed app that is already compatible with iCloud Drive. This includes Apple's iLife and iWork apps.

PhotoStream is now enabled in iPhoto on the computer.

I assume Photos (iPhoto?) is part of the iLife apps. I don't see how I can do what I want there other than automatically sync everything. The "shared" cloud button at the bottom of the Photos page is for sharing photos with other people. Am on IOS 8.

You can't do what you want.

You could put the photos into iCloud Drive from your Mac, but those photos would also get copied to your Mac.

I suggest you use an external drive as a back up.

So icloud drive doesn't really work like a storage drive in the cloud? All the files will always be synced to all devices?

Thanks for the links. I see icloud drive can work on the mac like an external hard drive but on ipad it's not clear if the same applies.

The idea was to save all my photos in the cloud while traveling, but not keep them on the ipad due to lack of space. Then download from the cloud to Mac afterwards.

No, that's not entirely correct (largely because you mention iCloud Drive and not photos), but from the point of view of adding photos from an iPad it is correct. Unfortunately I think Kappy's links are misleading you.

If you add photos to iCloud (be it by way of iCloud photo library or photo stream) from an iPad, you cannot then delete them from the iPad or else they will be deleted from the cloud as well (Notice how I differentiate between iCloud and iCloud Drive)

However all this aside, if you use iCloud photo library whilst you cannot delete the photos from the iPad, you can choose to have them optimised which should allow you to keep all your photos at full resolution in the cloud (assuming you have enough room) and lower resolution images on your iPad allowing you to fit many more photos on the iPad.

No, not at all. If you put files onto an external drive that's all that happens, the files are not copied to the drive in your Mac. If you add files to iCloud Drive, those files are copied to the drive in your Mac.

    Thanks for clarifying.

The icloud system is surprisingly confusing. I always understood icloud as syncing everything on all devices but I thought iCloud drive was pretty much just like an external drive. So it seems the only benefit of icloud drive is that it can handle any type of file but they will still all be automatically synced to all devices.

    To an extent.

Firstly, don't forget we are just talking about iCloud Drive, so it doesn't include other iCloud data such as mail, iCloud photos or your back ups.

Secondly, it doesn't sync data and documents to your Mac that are only relevant to iOS devices, nor does it sync data and documents only relevant to your Mac to your iOS devices.

Are there any cloud storage services that act just like an external hard drive (IE they do NOT sync files with the computer but simply store the files you upload for you to access later as needed)?

It seems dropbox works about the same as icloud with only an option to "selectively sync" folders but those folders will still sync with the computer automatically.

I think most will do that including iCloud Drive providing you use them through a web portal

Thanks for your reply. How do I go through a web portal? Not familiar with that.

It simply means use a web browser such as Safari to visit the services web site. In Apple's case that means going to iCloud.com and using iCloud Drive from there.

Thanks. Simple enough. I just created a text file and uploaded it to a folder in icloud drive (via the website). I then deleted the file on my computer. I signed out of icloud then back in. The file is still there. So hopefully it doesn't sync with the computer at one point and gets deleted. That's the one thing I want to be really sure about.
