My Apple TV will not play video from my iPad or iPhone. All I get is the loading icon.

How can I play video from my iPad or iPhone. All I get on my tv is the loading icon. This is for all video(movies on the cloud, home movies, internet video). use to work. I tried to update Apple TV but it won't let me do that either . The connection seems ok because I can still use my phone as a remote
