Q: How should I go about transferring data to the new computer?

I have an 2009 macbook pro which I need to migrate to a june 2012 macbook pro.  The older one has usb2, ethernet and firewire.  The newer one has usb3, thunderbolt and hdmi, so nothing really matches, and the apple articles suggest thunderbolt, or Firewire or Ethernet, but these computers have none of those in common. I'm wondering if a thunderbolt to Firewire cord would work.  I have about 170 gb to move and my internet is slow, 2mbs.  Thanks.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
