why do my songs show as untitled when I burn them to a blank disc

Whenever I create an audio disk from my ITunes library, the contents show as Untitled Song & Artist. Is there a setting I'm not aware of to prevent the songs/artist from copying as "unknown"?

ITunes for Windows-OTHER, Windows 7

No. Audio CDs do not contain information about track titles, artist, etc. When you import a CD into iTunes an online service (Gracenote) is used to look up these details based on parameters that can be derived from the disc (no. of tracks, track lengths, checksums). Gracenote will find a match for the CD and return details of artist, album name, song titles, etc. from the information stored in its database.

Even if the CD you are creating is a "duplicate" of a commercial album release, matching in Gracenote is going to occur only if you've initially ripped and then stored media in uncompressed ("WAV") format - and even that is not a guarantee of success. If your iTunes media is in m4a or mp3 format, and/or the disc you've created is a compilation of your own choosing, Gracenote will not be able to make a match - hence the "unknown"s show in iTunes if you re-import.

Given, however, that you must have the media in your library to create the CD, why would you want or need to re-import it?

Okay, maybe I wasn't clear and/or didn't provide sufficient information 🙂.

I'm not trying to import copied songs...I'm trying to make a usable copy of purchased CDs of which I have stored/imported on my hard drive. My wife and I don't have the same taste so there is a "master directory" and a separate "my music" directory for the music I like. The music in "my music" was copied from the "master directory" populated by copying music (drag/drop) from the master directory.

I added the new "my music" directory to my ITunes and I assumed the Gracienote information was obtained from the internet - it took over 8 hours to import the directory.

I like to use a copy in vehicles and my motorcycle as well as copy only the songs I like from each album.. Currently we are stationed in Germany and all of our purchased CD's are in storage in the US. My Mustang Shaker stereo system has a hard drive for music and I'd stored some using the master CD's before shipping the car to Germany.

I wanted to add songs to my Mustang audio system from my music directory. I created playlists and burned them to CD but when inserted into the CD player all songs and artists show as Untitled. The Shaker audio system shows the title and artist when playing a recorded song.

You'll need to consult the documentation of your in-car system and/or speak to people with knowledge about its use. I would have thought, though, that it should be possible to transfer music from iTunes to your in-car system as data (probably as mp3 files) using a USB memory stick or similar. That will preserve the metadata created/managed by iTunes for artist, album title, song names, etc.
