Many Safari tabs battery drain?

Hi,

iPhone 5 iOS 8.1.2

When reading twitter, etc I open links with safari so I can read the article later. After a couple of days of not going back to safari to read them I've got dozens of tabs open. When I look in the battery usage section Safari is a high use %(#1 safari 20%, twitter 10%...). Does having many safari tabs open use more battery than having very few open? Does safari use the battery to "maintain the tabs"?

Thanks!

iPhone 5, iOS 8

Ya that's what I was afraid of... haha thanks. I didn't realize the "depth" of my problem until I went to open a new tab and it wouldn't let me. I scrolled and scrolled and scrolled seeing I had quite a number already open. Better get cracking on my follow up!

One way the apps keep your information current is by calling "home" to wherever they get their information from when they are running in the background. If you have multiple tabs of safari open to read multiple articles - that pulling down of information is one reason accounting for the higher usage
