Jan 13, 2015 10:48 AM in response to susiesanby Niel,iWork 5.0 and newer can’t open AppleWorks documents. Use LibreOffice or an earlier version of iWork.

Jan 13, 2015 11:15 AM in response to Nielby susiesan,Since I just purchased 5 new iMacs for my business, will the people at the Apple store help me out with this? Will they show me how to do the conversions myself or will they charge me to do this? I just spent over $6K with Apple. What I don't want to have to do is keep one of the older imacs hooked up and running to be able to see and modify documents and spreadsheets. That would mean every employee would have to leave their desk and go sit at the old mac to work.
I did try saving the appleworks docs as a PDF, copied onto new iMac, and tried to open in Pages/Numbers. That didn't work.

Jan 13, 2015 11:18 AM in response to susiesanby Niel,★Helpful1. They likely will.
2. If you bought them less than 90 days ago, this will be covered under the ‘free phone support’ section of the warranty.

Jan 13, 2015 11:31 AM in response to Nielby susiesan,I will first try calling Apple phone support. If I can't figure it out then I will call the Apple Store.
As there was no paperwork in the boxes I do not have the number for the phone support. Where do I find the phone number?
I miss the days where when you bought a new computer you actually got a paper book/manual that told you what to do.

Jan 14, 2015 6:02 AM in response to susiesanby VikingOSX,Apple will not help you with migrating AppleWorks documents, because they have no shipping software that can open these documents. Don't waste your time there.
On your older machine with AppleWorks, export to Word (.doc), and Excel (.xls) document formats. These can be opened directly in the current Pages and Numbers applications.
As already mentioned, the free LibreOffice, an MS Office replacement suite, can handily open most AppleWorks content, where you can then save it in Word and Excel document formats — and access by Pages and Numbers.

Jan 14, 2015 11:47 AM in response to VikingOSXby Harold Coates,Why would anyone want to access Pages and Numbers? Few people could open them if emailed. Best choice if you are forced to leave AppleWorks is to go to MS Office. Most everyone can open them either Mac or PC. I still have thousands of AW documents to convert and I will be forced to choose MS Office even though I don't like Office or iWorks..
I wish Apple would upgrade AW to a workable program on the newer Mac's.

Jan 15, 2015 9:15 AM in response to Harold Coatesby VikingOSX,Harold,
If you have seen any of my other posts, you will observe that I recommend a Pages migration strategy to Microsoft formats for document interchange alternatives. In my post above, I offer different approaches to do this using AppleWorks, or LIbreOffice. Earlier Pages applications can help too.
We can advise in our posts to migrate to Microsoft document formats, and with Apple's legacy of application and document abandonment, it makes perfectly good sense. But we cannot create policy, alter personal choice, or end procrastination for those that post in this community. Change is an individual decision based on tolerance coping style.

Jan 20, 2015 12:02 PM in response to VikingOSXby Harold Coates,Thanks for responding Viking,
Yes, application abandonment has been rampant in the last few years beginning with iLife 7 and the complete change of the programs I learned and used very successfully...ie: iMovie6HD and iPhoto6. I still use both heavily as I could not find time to re-learn the new iMovie 7 and later versions. AppleWorks has been the favorite for many of us long time Apple users. I got my first then second Apple IIE a couple of years before the Mac was introduced. I founded a mfg. business and for 16 years operated 6 Mac's in accounting, marketing, process control and for my personal management tool. The data base for thousands of accounts was invaluable for managing the advertising information from our accounts. I still use the same DB format for personal and business Christmas card mailouts, etc. That simply can't be recreated on DB's like Filemaker-Bento without tremendous time which I don't have.
The AppleWorks WP and SS are so simple and very comprehensive for most folks to use. Word and pages are too cluttered and bulky to use effectively. I was shocked with the announcement of AW being abandoned. Why not make it the simple 'Pages Express' program for quick and easy use? Of course Apple has the Text Edit program but I never use it.
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

Feb 10, 2015 8:08 PM in response to susiesanby Franklynne,Hi. Just wanted to add my 2 cents here. My husband and I have NEVER gotten rid of our mac mini running OSX 4.11 because we knew that if we upgraded our computer we have problems accessing our older files. Even after our mini crashed, we replaced it with a refurbished one. We purchased it for about $120, and we got a better one that the original one we had. If you want your employees to be able to conveniently access files and software on your older mac, without having to get up, activate file sharing in the system preferences. If you set it up correctly, your new macs can talk to your old macs (as long as they are running a version of osx and connected to the same network). If you need some help setting it up, I recommend the missing manual series by David Pogue. I have the one for OSX Mavericks, and after setting up file sharing and printer sharing now I share files and a printer between an imac running mavericks, and a mini running tiger. Even though my really old color laser printer (a phaser 6120) can't be connected to any mac running an osx higher than 4.11, through printer sharing I am able to use it with my imac running mavericks.
