First follow the instructions in this support article.

If an iPhoto or Aperture library is the source of your desktop pictures, it may need to be rebuilt, or you may need to update the application to the latest version.

    Otherwise, continue as below.

    Back up all data.

In the Finder, hold down the option key and select

              Go Library

from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:

              Caches/com.apple.systempreferences

and move the following items to the Desktop, if they exist:

              Application Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db

              Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

THANKS Linc, I did everything you suggested in the order you listed but nothing solved the problem. When I open the iPhoto events, everything seemed in a mess. The dates seemed OK but events seemed all mixed up and scattered. I decided to delete them entirely thinking this was the problem. Do hope you might have further suggestions.

Did you rebuild the iPhoto library?

Not directly related to your problem, but try un-installing Avast and CleanMyMac2 as both can cause problems.

    Avast Un-install

You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

    CleanMyMac - Uninstall

    CleanMyMac2 Un-install

After un-installing, run this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

Eric, THANKS for your help. I uninstalled as you suggested and the problem was repaired. Thanks also for the suggestion on not having a cleaning app. I'll re-install AVASTl and hope everything is OK.
