In Settings>Messages>Send and Receive on the Pod is a pnone number listed? One will only listed if the ID used on the iPhone is also udrf for Messages on an iPhone.
An iPod will only receive Messages sent from an iPhone unless an iPhone is nearby and both the iPhone and iPod is setup for continuity.
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity
Otherwise, an iPad can get Ma text sent from a non-iPhone

Here is where it came from...
Dear Parents,
We have been made aware that many students and some parents have been receiving unsolicited text messages that contain links to graphic sexual and violence oriented content. Typically these messages come from unfamiliar numbers or numbers that do not follow the usual telephone number format used in the United States. We are alerting you to this issue so that you can be aware of it and visit with your children about remaining safe.
Our advice to anyone who receives such a message is to refrain from opening the message and any links contained in the message. We will be alerting students to this issue as well. We will be advising students to alert their parents if they receive a spam message such as this. We are also recommending that parents request that their cell service provider block all "short code messages" on their phones in an attempt to reduce the chances of this happening. It is also important that you alert your provider if and when these types of messages show up on your phones.
For your last reply the term "short code messages" is only from cellular devices. Since the iPod can only receive messages/texts from other iOS devices like iPods Touchs, iPhone and iPads you have nothing to worry about.
If it can receive the same message an iPhone can receive then wouldn't it be able to receive a "short code message" just like a cellular device can?
