Network connection was reset

We have been using itunes for some time now, but all of a sudden we get this message, " Itunes could not connect to the itunes store. The network connection was reset." We've looked on this site, but can't find the message or the solution. Actually, we don't have any idea to the meaning of the message let alone considering the solution! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the exact same problem, happened right after I "upgraded" to 7.0.1. I'm on satellite for my internet connection, I thought maybe the iTunes 7 added an unacceptably short delay before declaring a connection problem. Here's my output of diags just to make it more confusing. The bottom lines are different almost each time I run it (as to wether connections are successful or not). I think APPLE screwed up iTunes.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 2400
iTunes 7.0.1.8

I forgot to meantion, yes, I did do all the little diagnostics recommendations on the unhelpful "Help" section.

I actually had one output of diagnostics where conneciton was successful on all three tests. Here's the last three lines from diagnostics output run a minute or two later:

Connection attempt to Apple web site was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out.
Connection attempt to iTunes Store was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out.
Secure connection attempt to iTunes Store was successful.

I have been able to download video and audio podcasts in my current location which is a residence for foreign teachers in Nanjing China up until 2 days ago. The internet went down briefly and when it came back, when I try to log into the itunes store from itunes, I get the message:" iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was reset. Make sure your network connection is active and try again." It is really irritating since I just bought a multi-pass to the Colbert Report and I can't download any of them. I recently finished downloading and watching another multipass before this recent outage.

To followup - After 3 days of getting the "Network Connection was Reset" message, suddenly it was able to connect to the iTunes store, and several purchased TV shows were downloaded. However, I am unable to download some podcasts that I was able to download in the past. I don't believe it is a problem with the podcast producer, since it is a major news provider. Also, one purchased download is "stuck" and won't download more than 17 mb. I can't delete it or stop it downloading. The software doesn't respond to clicking on the "pause" or "resume" commands. I conclude there is a problems with iTunes software or iTunes service.

I am also experiencing this issue. My problems started when I upgraded my Mac Mini G4 to OS X 10.4.8 (PPC), J2SE5 Release 4.0, and Security Update 2006-05. After the upgrade, my ability to connect to iTunes has been seriously hampered. My best guess is that only 1 out of 4 connection attempts are successful. I have tried the Keychain repair solution but it has failed to resolve the problem. For the time being, I am switching back to my Windows XP System for iTunes connectivity. If Apple does not fix the problem soon, I am seriously considering backing up my files and reinstalling my Mac Mini from scratch (OS X 10.4.7 and J2SE5 Release 3. Does anybody have any ideas regarding how to resolve this issue?

Another followup - I was unable to download a video podcast or a purchased TV show for several days no matter what time of day. Now I find if I download in the late afternoon (PDT), they download relatively quickly. This suggests that the problems are associated with server or network load. Which server, which network?? Could be the iTunes server or my isp (I am in China connecting through a local university network) or my local network. Its a problem for delivering videos to consumers - how to troubleshoot all the possible points of failure. I recommend keeping trying and experimenting. I know - we shouldn't have to..

I am also experiencing this same issue. For me it is occurring on several computers at several locations that all use the same ISP. I am connecting from within the United States. The timing of the problems coincides with the update to itunes 7.0.1, but the same network timeout is occurring with computers still running itunes 6. When the connection happens to work (I had some luck this weekend but nothing the previous week or this week), the store loads on all computers regardless of version. Also, links and pictures on the apple site related to the itunes store don't work (the addresses usually start with phobos.apple.com). I was out of town when I updated to itunes 7.0.1 and had no problems (using another ISP), but when I returned home I noticed the connection issue. I had no connection problems prior to this. I can connect to the store using a different ISP, so the problem seems to be between the ISP and Apple. Apple was unable to find a solution, and my ISP claims to not understand the problem either. In my opinion it seems as if the way the itunes store regulates traffic may have been changed at the time of the 7.0 update, this has possibly resulted in some connections being blocked or significantly hampered. If the problem is caused by a setting that my ISP needs to change (and I don't know for certain that it is), Apple support was unable to offer any specific suggestions other than referring to the article about what to do if you can't connect to itunes. As other have mentioned, nothing in that article seems to solve this problem.

Has anyone spoken with a live person at Apple yet? I will probably be calling Apple Care today, as well as Hughes.net (I get my connection via satellite). Will let you know what I find out. Can anyone give advice as to how to go back to version 7.0.0? I'd like to see whether using the earlier version, which worked fine for me, would help.

I logged into Itunes store just fine on Sunday Oct. 14. Did not access it until this aftn on Oct. 20 and am unable to connecto to store, same error message as is posted here. No changes have been made to system. The problem is with Apple. I hope they fix it soon as they must be losing money on this. Typical arrogrant Apple response on problem(deny it is happening) If it keeps up too much longer there are other alternatives thought just not as nice.

I spoke with Apple (twice). Their only advice - reinstall Quicktime, which I did, reinstall iTunes, which I did, and reinstall (via archive/install) OSX which I did not do. After the reinstallation of both Quicken and iTunes, I was able to connect, but not able to do anything more (ie, download music or podcasts). However, tonight for the first time in over two weeks, I was able not only to connect but to download music. I have no idea what is going on, I suspect some type of bug in the software. And I will probably not be able to reconnect on a consistent basis, but at least I could do it tonight. If you haven't reinstalled Quicktime and/or iTunes, you might try it. Good luck. At least they aren't still trying to blame the ISP connection.

Is this still a current problem for other people? It's just happened to me too though I live in Singapore (where broadband is usually pretty broad). I have recently downloaded software updates but have been able to download podcasts etc. up until yesterday and now I get that useless error message "Network connection was reset."

I'm having the error (-9813) "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store an unknown error ocuured" "make sure your network is active".
My connection is fine, and this only happens when I try to add music to shopping cart or sign in, otherwise it's OK.
I've tried keychain repair and reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime for no avail.
No response from Apple. Anyone has a clue?
AB.

I think it may depend on the internet server settings somewhere in the path from your computer to iTunes. I am in China and sometimes (today, for example) it will not connect to the iTunes store. Then I will get several weeks of no problem connecting (downloading podcasts, purchased items etc.). The message is "the network connection was reset" when it doesn't connect. I have just decided to wait it out. I spoke with the local system administrator, and he said he hasn't changed anything. Its very irritating, but I think in China, different servers have different settings that affect connection to iTunes.
