thunderbird as default mail reader and sender

hello

new iMac, Yosemite 10.10.1. I installed TB to manage my 3 e-mail accounts (I really don't like the Mail app).

whenever I want to send a link to a webpage from Safari or a file as an attachment to a mail message, I expected that a TB instance would open. instead Apple's "Mail" will open. but of course it finds no e-mail accounts configured in it. so I have to manually open TB and manage to attach the file or whatever to the message to be sent.

for example: right clicking on a file the context menu that appears looks like this

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ddo52mbjbup1gb/Schermata%202015-01-13%20alle%2022.45. 39.jpg?dl=0

the icon next to "Mail" is the TB icon but it doesn't run even if I select it.

is there a way to set TB as the default mail SENDER in Yosemite?

thanks in advance

antonio

thank you but this is a check I already did, and the setting is the same in the Mail app too: Mail > Preferences > General tab > default e-mail reader: TB

I tried again but:

-when I want to send the link to a web page from Safari (File > Share > e-mail this page) a TB new message will open, whether the TB app is already running or not

-when I right-click on a file and choose Share > Mail, the new TB message doesn't open, even if the app is already launched

It's a Apple Mac Mail setting. You have to open Mail, which can be a problem to start with, and go to the preferences and on the General tab the top option is "Default email reader" Set it to Thunderbird.

I am working with Lion 10.7.5 so it might be different in later version of OS X.

I say opening Mail might be a problem because that app wants you to setup a email account before it allows you get at its settings.

So you are going to have to set it up with at least one of your valid email accounts or make a Gmail account just for this purpose.

Pay no attention to the people telling you to go to the Thunderbird forum.

As I wrote, the default email reader is set to TB in the Mail.app too. And my @icloud account is configured there, but not used (only at the very first opening of the app last month, a few emails downloaded, no emails sent from there).

I have read in a newsgroup about TB that this should be a long time issue, never solved. It seems that some professional programmers managed to go deep in the system to change some settings, but I'm an iMac newbie and don't want to go that far.

If there aren't any other solutions I'll keep doing as I did until now to send a file: manually oper a new message and attach the file desired.

Thanks to everybody.

I've installed TB and set it up with an email account. My main email program is MS Outlook. I've made the changes in both TB and Mac Mail to have TB be the default email program. I found a website that has a link to mail the site and clicked on it. TB's Compose/send mail window opened. I then changed back to Outlook and again tested and Outlook compose/send mail window opens.

So I don't have the problems that you are experiencing. Again this is on Lion 10.7.5.
